Oil Leak - Rear of Bike 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago

Hey guys! Sorry I've been conspicuous by my absence. Just working too much on computer at office and hate to get on it when I'm home!
Got a problem that has me a bit perplexed. I noticed an oil smear on the top of the chrome cover that covers the middle drive shaft. Figured it was probably the oil seal on the drive shaft so I changed it and a small O ring on the shaft near the bearings. That doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. Upon closer inspection it seems that the oil may not be gear oil (it has a pretty strong smell!). This appears to be motor oil. I've checked visually all over the engine top and bottom and can't see any oil traces. Oil appears to be coming from up under the battery box where all the electronics are located. I haven't gotten into removing any of that for a look see but thought I'd ask if anyone else had had a smilar problem and what they did to fix it!
30000 miles on the Roadie and still lovin' it!

Make sure the dip stick is tight first. And you have a crankcase breather hose on top the rear cyclinder that could blow some oil out.

Checked the dipstick early on and it's about as tight as I can get it! Don't really see any oil traces around the dipstick either.

Have you changed oil lately? Could be spilled oil finally running out. Might be coming from behind the front pulley cover. Worth checking anywho.

Musky,
I'm beginning to think you're right. I had changed the oil not too long ago. Didn't think I spilled any but it's starting to be the only logical thing left. I took the seat off, removed the battery, the battery case and all the electrics around it to get down to the oil tank. Whole area was dry to the point of being dusty. Sure took a lot of time and effort to basically accomplish nothing except possibly the peace of mind of knowing nothing's leaking there. Interestingly, the leak appears to have stopped.
I'm beginning to suspect that I must have spilled or overfilled at some point and just didn't notice. Buddy of mine said that with the oil leak it was trying to be a Harley! I'll take a pass on that!
Hope everyone is doing well. We've had a lot of rain from Fay here this weekend. Not much riding going on!
