Repack Steering Fork Drain 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Any info on repacking stearing bearings and replacing fork oil? Detailed steps would be great. Thanks!

Nothing comes up that's not in the manual.

Don't mix different types of grease.

You could consider adding slighty heavier fork oil if you find the front end a bit soft ... 7.5 or 10 W should be sufficient.

maybe I'm blind but I don't see this covered in the service manual, can you direct me to the pages that describe this procedure?

It mentions a fork seal driver and adapter that I would need, plus a damper rod hold and t-handle for the forks and a ring nut wrench for the steering. Most of those parts I can't find on the internet. What oil do you use... brand/weight/type? Where do you get that? Seems pretty complicated + expensive as that damper rod holder is @ $125. Couldn't find the other parts. Plus I guess I would need new washers/bushings/seals/etc.

Do I really need to do this?

Slyguy,
Are your fork seals leaking??? If not, then no, you don't need to go through the hassal of tearing them completely down and replacing bushings, seals, etc. and buying a bunch of special tools. Just drop the fork legs out of the triple trees, drain the oil (pump each leg several times while holding them upside down to get all the old oil out) and refill with the appropriate weight oil (7W-10W). As for oil, I've never used anything but Bel-Ray Fork Oil, which should be available at any bike shop. It's really not that hard to do, just kinda time consuming with dismantling the entire front end, if you're also going to repack the steering stem bearings.

A word of caution though: The fork caps are under pressure (from the springs), so be careful when removing them or you're liable to send one rocketing.

In The Wind,
Aaron

Almost forgot; When refilling the forks make sure you get the same amount of oil in each leg and after the new oil has been added, but before you close them up, gently pump them a few times to get the air out and the oil into all the orafices.
