mobil 1 kn filter 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Well last nite I went about changing the oil . As this was a first time experience I useed the handy dandy instructions found here on the site's home page. The pictures were very helpful as I function better on that level. Old guys need all the help we can get.
I went with Mobil 1 20/50 and a K&N filter. I noticed upon opening the filter box that it appeaded somewhat smaller in volume capacity. Probably one of those concoctacal illusions, any way things went according to hoyle. How ever it only took 4 qts not the 4.5 as expected Maybe the qts were in ml's, I think so. I removed excess from the funnel and filler neck with a oil vacuum pump and all was well.
50 degrees this am when the beast roared to life,I leatherd up and mounted the beast for the am ride to work. The cooler air temps significantly enhance engine preformance. ( raped ape stuff)
This morning on my 50 mile ride to work I noticed the engine mechanically speaking was noticably quieter and shifting felt smoother as well. Lets hope it stays that way.
Earlier posts state this is a bonus effect of the mobil 1 20/50. Right again I guess.
I want to thank this site for its contribution to my sanity and helpful technical pages of info. More do it yourself projects are on the agenda.

Keep Smiling

Good you stopped at 4 quarts, we need to edit that tech tip to reflect the change Yamaha suggests to prevent over filling and possibly causing excess carbon buildup on your exhaust valves.

Pictures are my friend too!

somewhere on here the proper level is 4 qts. and that is about what all are using..
Yes the valve noise is much quiter with the synthetic oil 20/50 and it will not break down with the heat like the dyno oil..
Glad your first oil change went well..

Jersey Rider, I hope you only put in 4 quarts as any more can lead to Sticky Valve Syndrome, commonly known here on this site as SVS. I also hope you selected your Mobil 1 carefully as a standard Mobil 1 20w/50 has friction modifiers in it that can play havoc with your clutch. I personally use Mobil 1 V twin oil for my scoot. I also use the K&N filter as it makes no sense to me to put high grade oil in and a cheap filter. Enjoy the new quiet and beleive me your engine likes the good stuff.

Changed mine for the first time on Saturday and had my laptop down in the garage while I followed the instructions( and pics) from this great site. Don't know what was in my engine before but after 20w50 and a new k&n filter, less knocking and running smoother.

Thanx guys.
All the tech stuff is easy read and follow.

If I can do it, anyone can. JON

A K&N filter allows more dirt into your engine than a factory paper filter. Yes it sounds nice and provides more airflow, but in doing so it allows more DIRT into your engine that ends up in your oil. It's about the worse thing for it. A filter using Nanofiber technology is what is actually better it would Hold 15 times more dust than wet gauze-type filters. Media removes 5 times more dust than traditional cellulose filters and 50 times more dust than wet gauze. (YOUR K&N) I'm wanting an Amsoil Nano filter, I have seen demos on what a K&N allows in, I was pissed because I just bought 2 for my Caddy's and one for my X. I took em out the same day and replaced them with Paper until I got the Nanofiber ones in. Trust me, go back to paper.

I'm not going to defend my statement other than to say there is PLENTY info on the net that will support the fact that a K&N is good only on race day, otherwise paper will provide better flow and filtration and that Nanofiber is way way way better than paper if someone makes one for our bike. MC

I for one love my K&N, you sir are right I believe, but to tell you the truth, with regular oil changes, the minute amount of dirt that gets in doesn't mean crap.

Breathing better is always a good thing in making power.
