Mostly it just quiets the internal banging down a bit. I haven't noticed any change in clutch feel or response, but the noise level from inside the engine seems to have lessened.

But to each their own. I know some folks use traditional oil made 100% from dead dinosaurs and are happy as a lark. I think as long as you keep the oil changed on a good schedule all will be well.

I was told the exact same pearl of wisdom (about changing it frequently) from an auto mechanic who specialized in Ford Mustangs. He even knew Carol Shelby. He said as long as the oil is changed on schedule, oil is oil is oil as long at it doesn't lose viscosity.

I also made it a point to ask him about synthetic and he actually balked at it. He said "why spend the extra money - change your oil regularly and use the cheaper oil".

I just checked and ROYAL PURPLE was around $12 bucks a qt. That IS expensive! Each change would cost almost $50 just for the oil. Whew! I think I'll change it regularly and drive it till it blows. I just cannot justify 12 bucks for a quart of freakin oil.

I've not checked on the Mobil 1 and how much it is, personally. But even if a quart was $8 bucks per qt. I'd still swallow hard at that price. I figure 2 bucks max per quart of oil is plenty to pay. Less then $20 each change is what I like to pay.

I think synthetic has it's place though. If one wants to pay extra for added metal to metal protection that's fine. In my opinion it's really great stuff for those that hate to change their oil so frequently. That's one of those things that even out the expense. Pay $60 bucks each 5000 miles OR around $20 every 3000 miles. That's the choices.

I've recently switched from Mobil 1 20/50 V-Twin oil to .......Mobil 1 15-50 full synthetic. Sold at Wal-mart in a 5 qt. jug for......24 bucks. Yep , my 'Liner takes 5.12 qts. but it gets 5. I'm saving about 40.00 in oil and it's working fine. Yes , it's car oil , but it is not "energy conserving" , so it's wet clutch safe.

Did I mention that the filter at Wal-mart is less than 3 bucks? Supertech 7317 (made by Champion....got good reviews).

So my 70.00 oil change has been reduced to 28.00 bucks. 42 dollar savings. Not trying to start a "debate" , just passing on good news. BB

it is not energy conserving if it is a 50 weight oil..

but if it is an API SL or SM...oil... it probably has friction modifiers

v-twin oil has an API rating SH/SG

I ran Shell Rotella full synthetic from Wal-Mart by the gallon for cheap and the supertech oil filter. Ran it for about 20,000 miles in my R*. It scared me after a while when I got more educated, but oil changes now cost me almost $60. I use Mobil 1 V-Twin and K&N filter. Think I may go back. It cost less than $20 with my previous setup and it performed well.

You are right. Just because it doesn't carry the Energy Conserving label doesn't mean that it is safe to use with a wet clutch. You make your choices and takes your chances.

I've asked Mobil that question and the only thing they will guarantee is their v-twin oil. However, there is no incentive for them to say otherwise.

The last time I got a filter for my GS1000 the parts guy tried to sell me some oil. I told him I use ordinary 10w40. He told me my clutch would fail. I told him I've owned the bike for nearly thirty years and it hasn't failed yet. OH, he says, quietly.

If it doesn't work out you get to learn how to put in a clutch. Not really a big deal.

All I know is that I just changed mine using Mobil 1 20/50 v twin and K&N filter, yeah it was $60, but it's still a helluva lot cheaper than the stealership!! On top of that after the change she ran smooth as silk!

One other thing this site ROCKS!! I printed out the oil change instructions and worked like a charm, no problems at all. Strong work gents!

Alright Canucks, what's our equivalent to the Supertech 7317 because I have yet to have found one in Canada... any other more affordable than $15 from the stealer filters out there?

I do it exactly like Big Bear. 5 qt. jug of Mobil 1 15w-50 and Wally's ST 7317 filter.

Total cost for the change? $25.47. 'Nuff said?

Been using the Mobil 1 15w-50 in every air cooled motor I own, wet clutch or not, for 26 years with never one issue.

Just do it!
