Where to put the oil. 2 Years, 11 Months ago

Getting ready for my first oil change, noticed that there are two different methods for refilling. The owners manual way, put in two quarts, start it, then add two more. And then there is the crankcase plug just behind the rear cylinder. Is it better to fill the crankcase directly? Or should I follow my owners manual instructions. Which method do you all use? Thanks, i know this is a minor issue and i'd likely be fine either way, but i thought i'd see what everyone else does.
