Well thanks for all the posts, I followed all the directions and changed the oil out today. Poured in only a gallon. I have to say I was real nervous starting the enging knowing that it was two quarts shy and empty in the crankcase, but it went very smoothly. I started it after I added the last two and ran it about 2 minutes (it was late, dark, and cold so i didn't take it out) then rechecked the oil. The dipstick was dry again. Is that odd? or to be expected since i didn't get it out on the highway and warm it up for 15 minutes?

Again thanks for all the replies, and the warnings. I had no gysers and that is a definite plus, though i did spill oil all over the garage while dumping from the crankcase since it's so low to the ground. Hooray for kitty litter.
