Dont forget to include the amount of oil you are going to spill all over the floor when you forget to fire it with the first two quarts in.......not that I know anything about that

So how much goes in at a change now (the amount at a change with filter is different than without filter and different from new)?

Even at 3 1/2 quarts that's sufficient to lubricate your engine.

I think I'll stay with 4 qts in mine. Oil doesn't just lube the engine it helps keep the heat down by distributing it throughout the areas that the oil circulates.

Yeah, me too. I just called my dealer and they have not heard anything on it yet. It must be the Stinking, er, I mean sticking valve syndrome thing they were talking about.

The memo may just be a remake of an old memo that said 4 qts.. I would guess some brainiac desided that the bike doesn't drain all the way. I'm good with 4 and not changing unless yamaha will give me a new engine

Having the oil tank is nice, in a sense, because it allows for more oil in the system allowing for better cooling / less breakdown because the "stress" is spread out over all the oil in there. Its not such a bad thing. I'll probably stick with 4L of oil anyway, the bike seems to like it.

Re:1700 road star oil 4quarts or 3 1/2 3 Years, 2 Months ago
I had my bike in the shop a couple of weeks ago and the mechanic told me I had to much oil in it. He said he took some out but didn't tell me how much oil I should put in when I changed it. He did tell me to be sure and check it properly. When I got it home I checked the oil after a short ride (5 minutes) It was just barely to the bottom of the dipstick. I put just a little in (hardheaded) and rode about 50 miles. When I came back I let the bike sit for about 5 minutes and checked it, it had to much oil in it again! So, it was time for an oil change, I drained it and refilled with exactly 4 quarts. When I checked it, before riding, it was barely showing on the stick. I rode for about an hour, came back, let it sit for 5 minutes and checked it, it was full! So, I'm a believer! My mechanic told me that it should really just be somewhere in the cross-hatched area of the dipstick preferably not to the top, which would be about 3 1/2 quarts. The Yamaha mechanic told that to much oil causes pressure to build in the valves and could result in damage!
You MUST ride the bike and warm it up, then turn it off and let it sit 5 minutes to check the oil properly!
