Oil marking Question(I know,I Know) 2 Years, 8 Months ago
listen....I know this is beat to death, but I need help.
Mobile 1,15W 50,markings API SM,SL/CF,silver bottle/cap
can I use it? I`ve been looking for over an hour to find
any real defenative statments on the lettering/info ???
can`t find anything on it that says friction modifiers
or energy conserving.I know it`s not motorcycle specific,
and I know not everybody here uses just motorcycle specific.
I just don`t understand all the SM,SL/CF stuff.

This site can explain it better than me ..... API

SG and earlier are safe to use but unfortunately are obsolete. As you know we have had various discussions regarding the newer classified oils.

My understanding (may be wrong) is that you can use C classed oils.

OK .... now you have me going.

SJ seems to work .... lots of folks have been using Mobil Red Cap without any problems.

SE is what Yamaha recommends.

SG is what the last 'safe' oil for a MC.

I think I have it right this time.

... WTH ... it's all hocus pocus anyways.

Go ahead and use the Mobil 1 15w-50, as long as you don't see energy conserving in the circle. I've used it for many years with no problems.

There are various API classifications of Mobil 1 25W-50, which can be differentiated by the colour of the cap.

I highly doubt that the Mobil 1 that you were using 7 years ago is the same as today's Mobil 1.
