Source of Engine noise 2 Years, 7 Months ago
04 with 25000 Kilometers . Always thought my engine was too noisy especially after warm up and mostly at mid rpms under small load ...a clunky rattle sound at rpm frequency from the front .Ive heard others complain about a similar noise . Anyway I borrowed my Girlfriends stethescope and Sure enough even at an Idle theres a noise mid Cylinder in the front jug that I dont hear in the Back . Cant hear it without the stethescope or a Big screwdriver to the ear at Idle . I suspect something where the Wrist pin , Piston and Connecting rod come together . Anyone with similar experience found the source ?? or the solution !!

I think mine gets a noise in it also once its warmed up, I can hear it better but it runs great, its like when you take off and lay the fuel to it and warm, thats when I really hear it, only has 1790 miles on it.

You guys are all too Funny !! I always appreciate both the Serious answers and the Ribbing !! .....Yes Amsoil 20 - 50, Adjustable Pushrods from Smith Brotrhers properly adjusted so that noise is GONE !! Doesnt matter what gear but more audible ( read obnoxious ) when motor not under load . But most important Distinct difference Front Cyl. to Back under stethascope at Idle , by Ear at operational RPM. Like I said I have heard others somewhere on this Forum with Identical Symtoms And before I "tear that Engine Down " for you Steve Earle fans .... Im looking for anyone who has found the Cause .
Have a Great riding weekend !

A wrist pin or connecting rod would make a loud clunking sound all the time, especially under loading.

In the Army I drove a 5 ton tactical semi that had a bad wrist pin and it clunked all the time until it let go and came through the block wall. (The mechanic wouldn't believe me that something was wrong inside.)

The cylinders sometimes make a "harmonic noise" that makes a clunking sound too. Go figure.

I'm running Amsoil too with 42,500 miles and get noise like that when she really warms up or if I run her in a higher gear at lower RPMs (borderline lugging).

Try keeping her in a lower gear with RPMs up more.

IMHO these bikes would very rarely have a bad wrist pin or rod bearing.

Not sure if I am hearing the same thing you guys are or not. I have what could be described as more of a rattle coming from the front end of the bike. Happens when passing through each gear, at about the same rpm.

change gas, does the sound sound like bb's rattling around in the front or top of the motor, mine did, started to use mid grade with no ethynol in it, the rattling has gone away, someone on here said it was detonation, i am just glad it has stopped for now!
