running the yama lube until I hit the 8000 mile mark, then palnning on changing to a syn.... from what I have read on here, syn is a better way to go.

It is customary to not use synthetic oil untill the engine is broken in. The recomended first oil change is at 600 miles. If it isn't broken in at that point it won't ever be broken in! Whomever told you not to use synthetic oil untill 8000 miles is absolutely rediculus. Next time you change the oil put the good stuff in and go.

Why is that? You think that changing the oil would stop the rings from seating? Why would that be? Or is it another reason?

Every vehicle I've gotten new has had an instant oil change to full-synthetic - they run alot better than those I had bought used with conventional oil in em.

Just curious as to why you say, I am very interested in oils.

Yup, looks like it's play in the garage time for me, I'm getting an average of 46 mpg with the wife on board, 48 with out. Went to Vegas June 20th through the 27th and got right at 46 to 47 with the wife on board and loaded with luggage. Thanks for all the input and advise, -Hammersly

As pretty as she is, I don't think I would be keeping such detailed fuel mileage stats..... By the looks of it, I'd prefer to get 46 MPG and shame on you if you don't too. Yep best signature pic on the Clinic!

And I have no idea what my MPG is with or without Schatzie, All I know is there is too much room and she rides too far back.

Amen to that Brother! It feels more right with Jen back there than with her not...nothing like a great riding partner top melt the miles away!

I would dump the oil. If you're running dino oil, big deal, the cost is minimal. I've got a Route 66 trip coming up in September and even though I'll be well under my mileage, I'm changing anyway. It's way easier to do the basics at home, oil & air filters, spark plugs etc.

The reason is because dino oil allows more wear than synthetic. On a new engine the cylinder walls will have peaks in the machining (yes even ceramic lined cylinders). In the first hours of new engine operation (actually it is more like 20 to 50 miles, and is why one guys oil looked like metallic paint) the rings will machine these peaks off the cylinder walls. Since synthetic allows very little wear (lab tests have shown original machining marks on gears after hours of running) it is best to use dino oil to allow the rings to wear off the peaks on the cylinder walls. Also because these peaks typically will be machined off by the rings in as little as 20 miles of running, it is important that several controlled short duration full throttle applications are applied during the first 20 miles (I know this goes against what the manual says) because once these peaks are gone the ring seating process is over. If ring seating is not done correctly during the first miles, your rings will not provide an optimum seal and will not last as long. Rings are forced outward to contact the cylinder wall by pressure in the cylinder getting in behind the rings and pushing them outward. Full throttle applications will insure that the rings are making full contact with the cylinder walls to provide for a good ring seat. I thought I would just throw this in there since we are talking about the break in period of oil changes. Anyway, dino oil will provide for more wear than synthetic to allow the rings to machine the cylinder walls more efficiently.

i dumped the oil, went with mobil 1 vtwin 20-50 and the suggested wally world filter in the tech section. Bike sounds better and not so noisy while staying at high way speeds for long periods of time. Milage stayed about the same, however I was hitting 85 to 90 most of the way, so no real help on my part there. Total round trip was 2206 in 6 days. Home to Oklahoma, then Oklahome to Arkansas, then back to Oklahoma, then back home. Quick turn around, but a hell of good trip. First time I made a solo trip that far before, kinda nice to have the road all to my self, but did find myself reaching back to squeeze the mrs. a time or two.

Interesting insights on the break in Road-Hawg, you're right I had assumed that our ceramic lined cylinders wouldn't need the "break in" since I've seem people screaming "Don't deglaze the cylenders!" I figured that was cause they came pretty much perfect. Never thought I'd seen an application where a less-durable oil would be an advantage! Thanks for the info!
