Virago Issues 2 Years, 5 Months ago
Hey all, I have an old 84 virago that I'm trying to get ready to sell. I figure that with all the knowledge on this site it was worth asking. Last year the bike ran great, but that is no longer the case. This spring and summer I replaced the starter, cleaned the carbs (more than once), replaced gaskets here and there, and put in new plugs. The bike will start and run, but unless I'm accelerating the front cylinder dies out. The rear cylinder seems to run consistently but without the front cylinder it can't idle and runs pretty jerky. Nothing like feeling cylinder 2 kick in at about 3000 rpm. I'm wondering if this is a sticky valve issue. Any ideas would be great.

Thanks in advance

What do the plugs look like? Possible Plug wire problem. Did you do a Compression test?

Viragos were known for crappy ignitor modules. I went through 2 on my '85 700. They are pretty pricy, but you can find people that rebuild them online.

I'll have to look into the ignition module issue, perhaps i'm not getting conistent spark on the front cylinder.

What about carb sync issues, can that cause this type of behavior?

thanks for the ideas i'll start digging again.

What Virago is it... 700, 750, 1000, or 1100? It's also very possible you have a jet clogged. I have access to the manual if you need some specs etc...

I've gone through the carbs and blown out the jets, at first i thought it probably was a fueling issue, but I can't seem to find any problems there, originally I had a stuck float, but that was one of the first things I fixed. I haven't done a compression test either since I don't have a tester, something that might be worth doing. Part of the reason I wonder about valves, in going through some other isses I went to put a bit of oil in the top of the cylinder, and accidentally poured way too much in. When I crankd it over all that oil went out the front exhaust valve. Stupid i know.

Oh i forgot, it's a 700, as far as I can tell the only removable jet is the main, i blew the others out, but thinking back on it one of them seemed a little tight, though with a light I could see the bottom of it.

The oil going out the exhaust valve would be normal when it comes up on the exhaust stroke. Never put the plugs back in when doing that or you may end up with more problems.

Were the carbs varnished? Did you spend time on the other parts of the carbs, making sure that everything is nice and clean.

Check Compression
Check for spark (Take care around fuel when checking spark)
If you have the same spark on each cylinder, I would be looking at the carbs again. This is a guess until we get some more info.

Hope that helps.

What is included in the more problems catagory? I can't remember if I lightly screwed that plug back in before I turned it over. I don't think i did but it was a while ago.

Again thanks for teh feedback.
I'll check spark/compression, then see where I am.

Well depending on how much oil was in the cylinder and if it was to come up on the compression stroke first you could bend a piston rod, blow head gasket etc.. if all thing played out just perfect. What is perfect? In short....Condition of engine, starting system, other cylinder/s have plug wires attached, ect... and engine cranks over fast and/or actualy runs on other cylinder/s for moment to cause enough force to do some damage. It's not very common at all..but very possible since I have seen it a few times in the 30+ years around the industry.

Check the few things mentioned first and then get back to us.
