New pipes - New Jet Kit - New Smoke - Help! 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Since I don't trust my tech skill on my bike and I work too many hours I had the shop put on my new cobra speedsters and jet kit. Shortly after (30 miles)it started smokin' just a tad after haulin' down the highway and stopping on the off ramp. Didn't think much of it sine the shop said they also cleaned the carb, thought maybe residual. It got worse, alot. Never smelled oil burnin' before the new pipes and rejet; looked at old pipes no bluing so I don't think it was burnin' oil before the new pipe install. Took it back, shop said, yep burnin' oil (ya think?). Dealership said check the jetting. But it's the rear cyl only, shop had me run ring free. Seems to be a bit better but still smokin' some. Should I run another bottle of ring free or give up and have it torn down and serviced. On 9.5K mile on bike. Trust U Guys,,, not so much the shop right now.

Ok, been all over the forum and looks like I am learning the hard way. With my 06 R* with the Cobra speedsters what jet kit and air kit will work best? I know the air kit could be a matter of personal taste but I am so a newbie and don't want to screw up my bike with what little cash I have to work with.

Welcome to the other side of the coin and . Some of us rely on the cheapest mods and repairs imagineable. I know that very well. We got some great talent here but unfortunately some of us don't have access to some necessary equipment to utilize the advice we get. Fortunately the R* is a very forgiving chunk of engineering. We do what we can with what we got.

No need to re-jet, just with pipe mods...maybe a pms tweek, that's all...
the white smoke is confusing tho....

Re:New pipes - New Jet Kit - New Smoke - Help! 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Not sure if the pipe mod and the smoke are related, just started after the the new pipes and rejetting. The first drive off from the shop I smelled a bit of oil burning and had a bit of white smoke after highway speeds for about an hour. Didn't get to ride again for a few weeks. It smoked after a 2 hour highway run. Smoking really bad white smoke (kinda like foggin' for mequitoes). Took it back to the shop. Was told was over filled with oil. This I thought was strange since the dealer has done all the maint. on the bike and there was no issue before the exhaust and rejetting. Was told by the dealer (tech) where I bought the bike that it was probably jetted wrong if it wasn't constantly smoking. The shop that did the mod drained and refilled the oil and supposedly took it for a test drive and it didn't smoke. I picked it up a few days later and 15 min. down the highway pulled off the ramp and fogged the whole neighborhood. Took the bike back to the shop and fogged the parking lot for the tech at the shop. Worked the throttle enough to clear most of it and determined it was the rear cyl. Shop tech said he had a guy come in with a warrior and ran some ring free through it for a tank full and it cleared the problem. Have done the same but it still smokes a bit after it gets hots from a highway run. Not as bad,so should I try another $20 treatment or take it to the dealer and have it torn down and serviced? Don't know which Cobra jet kit was used, The pipes and jet kit were a gift and purchased from J&P Cycles (Kit based on based on Cobra's recommendation to purchaser). I guess the lesson is dance with the one that brung ya (as in the original dealership) since no issues with their work. Appreciate ANY and ALL words of wisdom and encouragement at this point.

The first thing I would do at this point is see how much oil is in it..That means YOU drain the existing oil out and see how much you get..If your burning enough to "fog the neighborhood" Thats a problem. Then I would re-fill with 4 qts and a new filter and see how it does..If it still smokes as bad as your saying, You have some interal problems such as cracked rings, bad piston, valve, etc, hard to tell at this point.........
