spark knocking 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Hi everyone,

I got a little concern about my Road*, It started spark knocking lately. Same gas as before(87 octane), clean the air filter, still the same. Started using 89 octane gas, it seems a little better. Tried 91 octane gas, pretty much the same as with the 89 octane gas. Next step is to replace the plugs with iridium plugs. Any thoughts????

Mine has been doing it since brand new

Nothing has changed it, really. Cooler weather helps, but no amount of rich mixture or octane or anything else has helped. 5800 miles on it now, Cobra 2/1, K&N, Barons Jet Kit, Adjustable PMS, AIS removed. And she pings like a son-a-bitch when hot. Depressing.

Very likely to be carbon buildup..I would try a shock treatment with seafoam and see if it helps..)

Agreed , seafoam it or try Yamaha's Ringfree to get the carbon out. BB

Yeh, you're not running an overly advanced ignition setting, are you?

A lean condition can knock, but carboninzation of the cylinders is a common, and perhaps more likely, culprit.

Questcap: Now you have me wondering myself about the ignition setting. Could you please expand on that subject a little bit.

I've tried the Yamaha Shock Treatment

If the tps has crapped out it could cause that..I would suggest unplugging it and then a test run..if it is bad, then you should notice an improvement when unplugged...

Well, I run a Dyna 3000 ignition module, but only on the 34 degree advance setting. Stock setting, with the standard module, is said to be a 32 degree advance setting.

If you're running an aftermarket ignition module, and you're trying to run an overly advanced setting, it could cause a knock.
