wheel bearings??? 2 Years, 3 Months ago
|
|
I've been getting a small, but noticable to me, noise that sounds like a wheel bearing going bad-when I coast up to a stop sign or light-it's been happening for about 2000 miles---noise has not gotten louder or worse. I know the wheel bearings are sealed--so no lubing them. It's a 1999 Silverado with (right now) 20000 miles. Stock, stage 1 exhaust, AIS removed. While I'm riding I can't tell if it is the front or the rear. I know you guys just say--get louder pipes and you won't hear the noise---but I would hate to have a wheel lock up. Any experience with this at such low mileage???

Check the tension and alignment of the rear tire and drive belt. DM

Haven't had the experience, but would not make a determination on mileage, several things can cause premature failure, water being probably the most common. and sometimes they are just defective out of the box...

Maybe have somebody ride along side of you(your left side to avoid as much exhaust noise as possible) and see if they can hear it, help determine what it is, and if it is coming from the front or rear. Just a thought.

from what i learned, is that in older roadies (mine is a 99) the wheel hub has a tendency to have bearings spin, in which case if it gets bad enough u have to replace the rear wheel...do you have a lift that you can put the bike up to listen for noises? what kinda sound are you hearing? if it is spun, it makes a popping type of noise, and my bike had 2k miles on it when i got it no noise, at 12k i had to fix the spun bearing problem

I've got 45,000 miles and I believe the bearings are stock.
I would jack it up and give the wheels a spin.
Checkout the service manual for more direction, especially when replacing bearings.

Mine makes a low hum only when I am leaned over in a corner . There is no noticeable pull, wobble, drifting or anything bad, I have 18K miles on the bike. It sounds to me like side ways pressure is causing it. When I am going straight or at low speed I don't hear any noise.

You can lube a sealed bearing. I take a o-ring pick and pull the seal from one side of the bearing. Pack it good with grease. And then snap the seal back into place just like they do when they assemble it at the factory (been doing it for years). You would be surprised at the lack of grease some bearings have in them right of of the box. Regardless of brand.
