How do you get all the oil out of the Roadie. 2 Weeks, 3 Days ago
I am doing a complete oil change, and switching to Synthetic Oil. How do you get 100% of the oil out of the crankcase, and the oil reservoir?

I remember someone saying here on the boards that even when they teardown an engine there is almost a quart still left.

There's 2 plugs in the bottom of the engine. Anything that doesn't drain out, you'll be ok with the dilution factor. If you're really crazy about getting it out, I'd drain, fill with cheap synthetic, run 100 miles, drain again, fill again, install nice filter, and go.

You can't get all the oil out unless you tear down the engine. I would just drain both plugs and the filter and fill with your Syn oil. Thats what most people who have switched do with no problems.

About a qt is left. Only use 4qts to fill, especially on the 1700 engines, there has been a tech bulletin on oil levels being to high and a possible cause to sticky valves. Myself, I use auto Mobil 15/50w and the walmart super tech filter. 6, 7k miles, change. I don't even bother to check levels. 106k miles and no issues.

I use Rotella T 5w-40 in my truck, 16 quarts... There are many many synthetics much cheaper than that. It had dino oil before, when I made the switch i used a less expensive synthetic for a thousand miles before doing the switch again to rotella t.

My R* came with dino too. It was due for a change, but I'm letting the dealer change the oil and filter with whatever they use, I'll take it a couple hundred miles, before switching to full synth. I wouldn't put strait top end synth in over top of gunked up dino. At the shop that I moonlight at we call it 'break-in oil'.

Yeah you know the $8.00 stuff vs the $13.00

Personally when I changed mine over I just drained it like normal changed the filter and put in the synthetic. I have over 68,000 on mine.
Your not going to hurt anything if it does have a small amount in there.

Takes guts, but, if after draining the oil out of both plugs, take the filter off and start her up for 30 seconds. She'll pump that other quart right out in no time. I know this because I have done it.
I wouldn't recommend doing this on a consistent basis.

Can't wait to hear if that makes it into the Yamaha manual...

I did think of that, I guess it is no different than starting up the bike after an oil change to get the reservoir oil into the bike. The manual even says to flip the throttle a aeveral times and then turn off.
