Well thank you for doing this. I will keep an eye on this thread to see how this works out but now I've got the confidence to get into mine, I think I'm running a little rich as well. I want to pull my carb and check it out, just got to wait until I have enough time to do it right.
Also thanks to all you guys on here who are so willing to "help a brother out"!!

You'll need to take out the pilot jet and see what is stamped on it, a magnifying glass will help. since the main jet sounds like a DJ, that is not where you are eating gas, your cruise mileage is gas from the pilot ckt, stock pilot jet is a 35.

Mikuni's are stamped on the side, about 1/4 inch down from the top. All Mikuni have a box in a box symbol on them and then the number. Sounds like this is not a Mikuni and could have very well been replaced, a #35 is stock size. Can't tune a carb with unknows, If the pilot jet is too large, not even closing the pilot screw to it's leanest position will help if the pilot jet is way big.

So I need to get a 35 DJ pilot jet? While I had everything off I went ahead and changed to these iridium plugs everyone has been talking about I think I read in one of Musky's articles that the plugs needed to be new or almost new when you were doing this, is that right or should I leave the old ones in till I get the jets figured out and the right size??

So as it stands right now I have trimmed the choke knob, put NGK Iridiums in it, and moved the clip on the needle from the fourth to the third slot from the top, I moved the clip thinking if it lets the needle fall farther down it will not let in as much gas?!?!? Hopefully that is the right move and thinking, since I don't have another set of jets and there is no marking on the pilot jet (even looked at it with a magnifying glass, and nothing on it) the weather here is way to nice, not to mention a buddy of mine who rides a Harley sat in my garage all day talking a bunch of MESS that my bike was not running and we couldn't ride on such a nice day. I put everything back together and will go on a long ride tommorrow and see what happens from there? You guys were partially right it wasn't THAT BAD but dang sure not something that I would want to do every day.

It's not a dj pilot jet, their numbering system is different than mikuni. Here's the stock part number:

SKU: 4KM-14142-35-00 $3.84 at yamahasportsplaza.com
JET, PILOT (#35)
