Another Oil Question 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Plain and simple, have used Rotello oil in diesel engines for years and have no problem changing oil in my recently acquired Roadstar. I don't mind spending the money for Mobil 1 or Amzoil or Royal Purple or whatever, especially since my local dealer wants $100 for a semi-synthetic Yamalube oil change. However, I have access to gallons of Rotello T 5W-40 synthetic($15 per gallon). I know some folks on this board use it and just want some "testimonials" about it's performance. I ride in temperatures from 35 to 100.

Thanks

Here are some actual oil analysis results from a Kaw forum.

Rotella

5w-40 seems a little light to me, but what do I know...

I tried a number of different oils, rotella being one, my ride didn't care for it, had a bit more lifter noise, could also be because of where I live, mine seems to do better with 15/50w or 20/50w. Amsoil was a bit better than the automotive Mobil 1 I normally use, but at double the cost, I've kept with Mobil 1. I've tried Castrol Syntec @ 3k miles lifters started to tap dance, Royal Purple same thing at 3k miles. Mind you, I only use automotive now and Mobil 1 15/50w change 6, 7k miles, and use the super tech filter

My Roadie loves it (as did my Concours & Shadow), I get less valve noise & clean-looking oil coming out @ changes. It's cheaper than any other synthetic out there & can be had at any Wal-Mart, AutoZone or truckstop on the road. My riding temps are similar to yours (20 in winter to 105 in summer) & I ride mine hard!

I switched from PO's Yammalube and Yamafilter and put in Rotella-T 15w-40 + K&N 303-C and lost 50% of engine noise, even with the windshield.

When I talked to the service manager to schedule my tranny warranty work next week, the first thing I told him was that I would bring the oil and filter for the refill. He found a KN303-C in stock for a reasonable price so I'm just bringin the oil.

Next change on my CB750 chop I am going to switch from Repsol to the Rotella-T and see how it likes it.

Max127 did the service advisor try to sway you from rotella? I have rotella t 15w40 in mine right now will change the oil here shortly and either stay with it or give amzoil a try. Cost wise I'm leaning more toward rotella. A gallon of rotella ($11.99) and a supertech oil filter ($2.97) i believe at walmart. And the good thing is my bike has had no problems with this flavor.

I just changed over to Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic as per Erbman02's advice. I also put in the Barnett clutch and the upgraded Speedstar oil pump drive. The Speedstar drive is a fair bit meatier than stock so it looks good to me. Haven't had a chance to road test it yet, maybe Saturday if the rain stays away. I'll let you know how it works. The pull on the Barnett clutch is about 30% more than stock. Easy-peasy for the clutch and the oil pump gear. Biggest problem was scraping the old gasket material off. My buddy just had a Barnett put in his bike and is very impressed. My concern with the Mobil 1 15W-50 is clutch slippage, so Erbman02 if this doesn't work I'm blaming you!

No, no. lol I just said what I used for most of the 106k, and not have an issue, did not advise you to use it. Ya not gonna have issues though. And I'm not using the Barnett upgrade, using a Virago1100 spring plate piggy back on the stock. Still stock friction plates, 50k on this set-up mod. I went with the virago mod after I put the 42hsr on, I got a nice boost from the carb that I would slip in all gears, wrench at my dealer told me about this mod, so went with it, and have not been disappointed. He also gave me a mod for the crankcase breather set-up that I've been using too. Wrench been working on Yamaha for 30 yrs. He also did my tranny recall, he wouldn't let any other wrench touch my bike, he did all of them on the first go round, bout 40 to 50 he had told me. Shoot, I was up in the shop for hours watching, 47k when it was done, zero oil or sludge build-up inside that engine. But he still doesn't believe in synthetics. go figure.
