#235981 TROB (User) Junior Boarder Posts: 117 Well, what do i do now? stripped carb bolts 1 Week, 6 Days ago   well, i need some advice. The bike has been a big headache today and now it just got worse. If all else fails send the carb to me and I will get the screws out and send it back. I expect you to pay for the return trip, but won't carge anything for labor. Use a Dremel and cut a straight notch across the head so you can use a flat head screwdriver to get the screws out. If that doesn't work, you can try small needle nose vise grips. Those screws are junk and everyone replaces them. Not sure if they are M4 or M5 thread, but Lowe's and Home Depot sell metric bolts & screws, and Ace Hardware sells them in stainless if that's your preference. Take one of the brass screws with you to make sure you get the right size, and pick up some socket head cap screws to replace them. Cheap fix and you'll never have that problem again. The dremel trick worked like a charm and I replaced them with Allen head bolts from Lowes. Thats exactly why they are soft, Mikuni does that on purpose, better to strip the screw head then to use stainless or some harden screw that would strip the thread in the carb body. There's a side note about the screws in the tuning manual for their hsr carbs, so they use soft screws in all carbs they make. I have a Grabit kit that has come in handy more times than I can remember. Just be sure when you get the harder screws to not over tighten, or you'll be looking for a carb I second that caution wholeheartedly , I stripped the threads on my carb body right after going stainless , managed to save the day by going oversize slightly and re tapping the holes .
