I just changed over to Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic as per Erbman02's advice. so Erbman02 if this doesn't work I'm blaming you!
No, no. lol I just said what I used for most of the 106k, and not have an issue, did not advise you to use it. Ya not gonna have issues though. And I'm not using the Barnett upgrade, using a Virago1100 spring plate piggy back on the stock. Still stock friction plates, 50k on this set-up mod. I went with the virago mod after I put the 42hsr on, I got a nice boost from the carb that I would slip in all gears, wrench at my dealer told me about this mod, so went with it, and have not been disappointed. He also gave me a mod for the crankcase breather set-up that I've been using too. Wrench been working on Yamaha for 30 yrs. He also did my tranny recall, he wouldn't let any other wrench touch my bike, he did all of them on the first go round, bout 40 to 50 he had told me. Shoot, I was up in the shop for hours watching, 47k when it was done, zero oil or sludge build-up inside that engine. But he still doesn't believe in synthetics. go figure.
Not to worry, Erbman02. I'm a big boy. If there's a problem, me fix. But I doubt that there will be one

Did I read right on here somewhere that 15w50 or 20w50 even in auto oil DOES NOT have friction modifiers in it? Thought I saw that on a post recently.

Very well could have. I have yet to see a full syn at 50w having friction modifiers. But easy to tell, takes all of a second, look at the API circle, if the lower part of the circle has nothing written there, good to go. Look at one that has something written there so ya know exactly.

Right on! Now either use mobil 1 synthetic 15w50, or rotella 15w40.

I just picked up my 01 about 6 weeks ago and I'm thinking I'll go
to Rotella 15-40 synthetic. Used it in my Vmax no problem. It has
Mobil 1 v-twin oil in it currently but at $9.50 a quart I can't see
it being that much better than the Rotella. I can pick up the Rotella
Synthetic for $20.00 a gal and change twice as often. I might have to
do that anyway in order to get that elusive 5th qt out.
Regards,
Chris

+1 Shell Rotella T
I used the petroleum-based 15W-40 Rotella T at my 600-mile break-in change, then switched over to the synthetic-based 5W-40 Rotella T somewhere around 2k miles. I'm a believer!
If you check the numbers, Shell Rotella T is hard to beat.
