Re:Horrible Gas Milage??? HELP PLEASE!! 2 Years, 3 Months ago
OK I read through Mr C's thread for using the 6 inch K and N filter the link above in Flash reply. and I still have questions.

He has the Barons Jetting as Needle Clip on 4, 170 main, 35 pilot and PMS at 2 1/2 turns.

I have right now needle clip on 3 with a silver washer above and a plastic spacer and silver washer below, 175 main and the unknown pilot but a 35 in the mail to me suppose to be here tommorrow, so if I put this filter on put the new pilot in do I leave the 175 main and move the clip back to the 4th with the same spacers or do I change do to the difference in the 175 and 170. At least as a starting point.

My understanding is the 175 allows more fuel in so leaving the needle on the 3rd clip and spaced the way I have it, it should be the same, or am I way off as usual.

Thanks in advance, you guys have been terrific with helping me and can't thank you enough for taking the time to help.

Sorry Flash the PM I sent you had me on the fourth clip which is not right I am up on the third.

OK OK OK tommorrow is gonna be the big test.

I finally got the new 35 pilot jet in the mail and put it in, 175 main jet, needle on the 3rd clip and the PMS was at 3 and a half turns out and moved it to 2 and a half turns out. Went for a short ride tonight just to make sure that I got everything back together right but will top off the tank and do a full run tommorrow or the next day, gotta make the job interview first but definately want to get some bike time on before the rain gets here.

No matter the results just wanted to thank everyone here again for all the great help you have given me through this.

Re:Horrible Gas Milage??? HELP PLEASE!! 2 Years, 3 Months ago
I bought an 06 silverado approx 5 wks agowith RODABURNERS on it,carb jetted but not over done/too fat on fuel calibration as many shops do which is key.

But the prior owner had the car setup too rich,i could litterally pump the gas 2-3 times for a little prime and fire it up dead cold/50-55 deg F with no choke at all and could take right off 20 seconds later after letting the motor get some oil pressure going, thats too rich IMHYO.

So i backed off on the fuel calibration a tad so i now have to use a littl choke to get it fired up and & keep it running for 1-2 mins ,then after that i can pull away feather clutch/gas a bit and take right off with no heasitation/or sputtering/backfiring thur carb nada, and it will idle ok then too, much better that way and plugs look better too.

Run great now when hot, motor seems a little crisper when it coms to throttle resonce esp comming off idle now that it's not setup over rich which made it soggy esp when it was hot.

So post that carb tweak I have tested 3-4 tanks of fuel for mileage all of it being mixed type driving with a little in stop go traffic but majority in rural areas/out in the country sort of speak anywhere from 40-60mph with plenty of stops here and there as for people turing off main roads i was on to homes or smaller side roads.

Anyway, best was 45mpg in that mixed driving being very very good short shifiting it and not heavy handing the throtle either. That's because every little touch on the throttle on these bikes gives a shot of fuel into carb from accell pump which can kill fuel mileageesp if your the type that's on & off the gas all the time.

So on the open raod/interstate at maybe a steady 65-70mph i think should be able to get at least 47-48mpg and maybe even 49-50pmg with the wind behnd me.

But on avg i got 37-38mpg in that mixed driving without wife on back.

A friend of mine cant break 35mpg with his 05 R* with cobra pipes & jetted carb with only him on it,it kills him when he see's me getting 50+ mpg on my other bike riding 2 up when we ride together with only him on his bike & 2 people on my bike with windscreen & bags on that bike too.

My other bike riding 2 up /wife and myself consistantly gets 50-51mpg in that same mixed driving stated above. My other bike is a 1977 kawi kz1000 4 cyl inline & 4 26mm carbs with 4 into 1 kerker. But the R* cant touch that mpg riding 2 up in that mixed driving, thats for sure. Of course i fine tuned/dialed in the carbs for the 4 into 1 kerker pipe for a little additonal fuel it needs with the better breathing kerkr but not to rich /fat which many people do and thats why i get such good mileage with that bike. Been rididng that bike in that state of tune 33 yrs since i bought it new in 77 and emidiately installed the kerker and tweaked the carbs.

OK I am officially aggravated and confused, with the old unknown pilot jet and 175 main with the PMS at 3 and half turns out put the new NGK iridiums in and got to 40 MPG and that was mixed highway and running through the national park with a run up to 105 plus to be a smart ass to my buddy on a harley, but that was just the one tank the next three or four tanks averaged 32 to 37 MPG. Now put the 35 pilot in PMS at 2 and a half turns dropped down to 36 MPG. No kidding gassed up like 100 yards from the freeway got on and ran between 65 and 70 on realatively flat road with minimal wind for 167 miles till I had to trip to reserve pulled off at next gas station and filled back up and it took 4.714 gallons and odo read 172.5 which by my redneck math is 36.6 mpg. Coming back the same speed and at 160 tripped to reserve and hit gas station at 165.2 and it took 4.586 gallons with again with my redneck math is 36 mpg.

What am I doing wrong????? Bike is stripped down, no bags no sissy bar just me and windsheild. I know this tuning a carb can be tedious but dang I seem to be takin one step forward and TWO HUGE LEAPS BACK......... Only good thing today is it was a nice ride with all the fall colors and good temp so not a total loss but good ride kinda spoiled when I figured the gas milage and was pissed the rest of the way home.

Is the choke shutting off completely? Did you do the choke knob mod? Did you check the float level? Try with a Mikuni 170 main jet, but don't touch any other setting, or go to 2 turns out on the pilot screw and see what that does. At this point one tweak at a time, so you can compare. Float level is also critical, too high and it sucks the gas up guicker.

Yeah I did do the choke mod back about a month ago, checked it again today. Could you give me some guidance on how to check the float level don't know how to do that?? I have downloaded the manual from Curts website is the float level check procedures in that or somewhere else I can look it up. Thanks in advance.

P.S. And I knew to come back and check with you guys stopped by the dealership cause I also buy my hay for my horse from the owner and the mechanic told me to drop the main jet down to a 145 which seemed a little crazy even to a non-mechanic like me, seemed a little drastic

I'd be running from that wrench. 145 is way too small. I'd suggest you first check float level, if it needs adjustment, do that then check again mpg's. Reason I say to check float 1st, if ya don't have to drop the bowl, one less thing to do, same with adjusting the pilot screw, don't have to open the carb yet. If that's good and no adjustment necessary, try leaning the pilot screw by 1/4 to 1/2 turn then check mpg's, (lean is in on the screw) Just don't go too lean where you get excessive decell popping, certainly do not want backfiring. Some popping is considered normal, especially from decelling from a high rate of speed. Last to try would be the 170 Mikuni main jet, then ya have to drop the bowl.
