To inspect the bike is placed on a lift with the front end off the ground place your hands on the lower end of the fork tubes and push and pull. If you feel movement they need to be at least serviced and retorqued. The service interval on the steering head bearings is 16,000 mile intervals. I checked and repacked my bearings at 12,500 and again at 26,000 when I found the upper bearing sticking and rusted. I will probably start servicing mine more often, at least once per year to insure that I do not have another problem. I am sure some of the issue is that I live in a moist coastal environment and ride in a fair amount of rain. There has to be a better lube than white lithium grease as it does not seem to be up to the corrosion resistance required in this application.
