Hello All,
I am new to this forum and hope that you can help. I have a Roadstar Silverado 2004 and live in the UK. Recently my clutch started to slip and my mechanic fitted a new one. Within 2 weeks this started to slip as well. His view is this, because the bike has Vance & Hines powershots and been rejetted, this affected the clutch and as a result there is no adjustment in it. I am not a mechanic – I just ride so need some help. The mechanic is stating that he intends to put 2 springs on the clutch as this will make it stiffer, thus giving room for adjustment – but may give me issues with the lever as it will be very stiff. This gives me some concern as I have to ask myself if he knows what he is doing. Has he fitted a Wildstar clutch when it should have been a Warrior one? Can anyone give me help or advice? AJ.

Welcome to the Clinic...
Your exhaust and jetting has nothing to do with the clutch... improper adjusting on the cable or a weak clutch spring will cause slippage... If you are gonna have to go back in and replace the spring, I highly recommend the Barnett pressure plate upgrade... this will make your lever a tad stiffer, but your clutch will never slip again! I have heard of double plating the clutch spring, but I just dont trust that... I know that a lot of have done it, but the tolerances inside there were made for one...

The clutch springs are known to be weak so upgrading the spring should be OK. What oil are you using in the engine? The engine oil is shared with the clutch and if your oil has friction modifiers in it that could be the cause of the slippage. If you don't know what oil is in it, Change the oil to a good motorcycle specific oil and take it for a ride.

Change mechanics.
It's not uncommon see clutch slipping on the R*. I can be due to poor choice of oil or to the weak clutch spring.
MS1700 posted a solution that worked for him; you could try that first .... Fix
A Warrior spring is a good fix over the stock R* spring.

Put in the Barnett clutch. Do it yourself; it's easy-peasy. There is an excellent how to article on this site on how to do it. Cleaned up my clutch slipping issue. Highly recommend the change over; it's what Star should have put in there in the first place. And while you're in there, upgrade your oil pump drive. Also easy-peasy and worth the peace of mind.

I'd listen to these guy's if you don't know what's in it for oil do that first. it's easy and cheap.I have an 02 Road Star with v&h long shots and k&n bak system in it with out any clutch issues so far.Just gave my son a ride home last night and our total weight would be at least 500 pounds.Rolled on the throttle and she just pulled as hard as ever no clutch slippage! |
