Yea for some reason GL 5 can not always replace GL 4, Unless it says GL 4 compatible don't trust a GL 5 in it's place, It's like oil voo doo scientific garb, Maybe Scottw can explain in one of his 2 cup of coffee posts, Scott?

This is correct. Not all GL5 lubes are GL4 compatible. If it is, it will specify "Can also be used where an API GL-4 lubricant is recommended".

It's misleading oil voo doo, still, Any sg oil goes where a sa, sc, se, (For instructional purposes only) goes, so why with gear lube does not a GL 5 do in a GL 4 application, I never see it explained. It's misleading and people who "Would Think" can end up footing the bill on a new Transfer case.

Now they also started same crap with Brake fluid, put some 5 in where you have DOT 4 and see what I mean?

They are making it harder to work on your own stuff wo screwing up, soon as we figured out the cars, voo doo electronics, sensors and codes.

This is a rant!

I vaguely remember something about the additives used. GL5 lubes are used where extreme temperatures and pressures are present as in applications where hypoid gears are used. In this high temp high pressure environment, the temp and pressure can reach a point to where the surface friction becomes too great for the lubricant molecules to adhere to the surface. Thus additives are added to provide a lubricant film that will adhere to the surface. This film is provided by reaction of various chemicals with the metal surfaces. Most contain sulfur, phosphorous, or chlorine which are corrosive to yellow metals like bronze, however a balance is achieved that will supply the adhesion performance required with minimal corrosive reaction.

Some GL5 lubricants have since started using additives that are yellow metal friendly. But again, not all have, so be sure GL5 lubricants specify it can also be used in GL4 applications. My memory may be off on the details a bit, but this is the jest of it.
