Checked the valve adjustment. 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Well it was supposed to be a rainy weekend so I figured that I would pull the tank and rocker covers and have a look see. The bike has 25,000 miles on it and the manual says that I should have inspected/adjusted the valves many miles ago. I think the book suggests 16,000 miles. Well they were just fine and didn't need any adjustment. All four plugs looked like new and just a bit grey/tan in color after 15,000 miles. While I was at it i backed out the pms another quarter turn to 2 and 3/4 just because the plugs suggest that she is NOT running rich at all. It turned out that the thunderstorms were missing our part of the state so it was off for a ride and putting ol' Betty though her paces has me grinning from ear to ear. What a machine!

was it easy to do that check? my 2001 has 22,000 and the valves chatter alot. I wanted to check and while I have the head covers off, I was going to send them out to be rechromed.

About the same miles on my daily commuter and mine were in spec also. I usually change plugs at 10k even if they look good. Nice to know they can go more if they have too.Yep - great bikes if you'd rather ride than wrench!

2007 stock daily commuter

Just print out the helpful instructions in the tech section of the Clinic here and it's very easy. The instructions are mostly for the 1600 cc engine. The difference is the 1700 cc doesn't have the "spacer" between the rocker cover and the head and some of the bolts are different in length. As for the spark plugs, I had changed them at 10,000 miles the first time and do plan to change them again soon but this second set sure looked good after firing for 15,000 miles.

I think manufacturers have a lot of items to check at certain intervals that really do not need to be checked at that particular time, in order for the dealership shops to stay busy. 16000 miles is nothing in terms of wear over the life of an engine. If the rockers are out of adjustment at 16000 miles, I would be wanting to know the design flaw. There is simply not enough wear at 16000 to justify checking adjustment. It is similar to designing a part to wear out to insure parts sales.

FYI However, some sacrificial parts are designed to wear out to protect a part with a more important function.
