Oil leaked from drain plug 1 Year, 11 Months ago

Did the oil change on my 2002 over the weekend. Things went well, replaced the 17mm drain plug with the 14M 1.50 drain plug. After about 200 miles ride. Found a tiny amount of the oil under the engine. So I re-tied the plug. Did about 50 miles today. The oil still not stopping. Upon further investigation. The crash ring that I used was too big, so the drain plug actually not really sealed tie. Will like to purchase the right size of crash ring. Then re-do the oil change. Checked the oil sticker, still about the same amount that I put it in. Thinking about just do the lower part (not the oil tank part). What is the best way to find out how much the oil has lost over the last 250 miles? Thanks.

14mm crush washer too big? Thats what I use... copper though. I dont use the plastic ones provided with the new drain plugs for obvious reasons you stated. As for ME... I would start over and chalk it up as experience. Having had SVS, I believe as a result of too much oil, why try to calculate the loss of oil based on a 5cm droplet forming on the ground at a rate of 4 per hour over the last 48 hours totaling 250 miles. I am only an average wrench who likes to tear into my bike and willing to pay $$ for my errors. But look at the lessons learned!

I used the aluminum kind that I believed the inner was the correct size, but outer diameter was a bit too big to fit right into the space. So, it is kind of off the center and caused the leaking oil. If I could not find the copper ones, then I'll just re-used the one that was on the OEM 17mm plug. Anyhow, it is not a good feeling to see a puddle of oil after an oil change, even worse, after 200 miles riding. Luckily, the leak was miner, otherwise, I might just be stranded somewhere. Now, have to figure a right way to find out the right amount left in the bike. Thanks.

Next time ya take the bolt out, feel around the hole, you will notice a slight round ridge, think it was toward the front of the hole if memory serves me right. I too found out the hard way with a bolt that used the plastic washer, darn thing was too big, and rested on the ridge so it wouldn't seat flat, creating the leak.

Went to O'Reily yesterday. The copper gaskets were the same size as the aluminum that I used. So ended up reused the one on the OEM plug. Rode 30 miles, sat the bike overnight. The leak has stopped. What a relief. I'll go to the stealer sometimes before my next oil change. Just to get some of those smaller size gaskets (Part# 214-11198-01-00). Thanks for your help.

Had the same issue when I went to 14mm. The washers I picked up looked like the right size but I had a slow leak. I put the Yam OEM back on to test it and the leak stopped. Have not been able to find one that matches the OEM spec at the auto stores.

That's a good suggestion. Multiple usages would definitely save money. I can see the clinic patch on my way with the money saved.

I just re-used the OEM washer on my first oil change. No leaks, no fuss. I plan on using it again on my second oil change. I don't see a reason not to unless it is damaged. Unlike a crush washer that can only be used once, the stock washer does not crush and should be good for as long as you want to use it.

Question? why change the plug? I've changed my oil and replaced the crush washer and never had a leak.
