charging system or battery? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Okay guys I tried to search for this but couldn't find an answer to fit this problem.First I noticed the clock wasn't keeping time and the trip meters were zeroing out every once in a while. Then I went to go to work one morning and the battery was dead.I had to boost it with the wife's car.I road it to work about 10 miles lights were bright every thing was working fine.I get off work 12 hrs. later and had to boost it to get home.I tried it the next day and it started just like it always did.I checked the voltage twice the first time when the trouble first happened it showed 15 volts at a high rpm. 14.5 with my high beams and spot lights on.Today it showed 15.5 volts at just above idle and 15 volts with every thing on.It seems to be okay now so it's a real pta. to find the problem like this.Any idea's where to look?

Stroker:

I'm willing to bet neither... Check your cables and the (-) that runs to the frame in front of the battery.

The fact that the clock and trip meters reset tells me you have a bad connection. Something is loose...

They would only reset if you lose connection (like pulling the + or -) off the battery or if the battery goes 100% flat.

If you are getting 15 + volts then it is overcharging which is not good for the battery. I suggest that you replace the regulator. Overcharging is not good for the battery, or anything electronic!

As for the battery dieing I suggest that you get a tube of DI-ELECTRIC GREASE from an auto paarts store or electronics store, any time you handle an electrical connection use the grease! Take the battery connecctions apart and clean them (use a pocket knife and scrape the battery post and both sides of the wire terminal) grease them up and put them back together. A lot of electrical problems are caused by poor connections; a clean greasy connection will elininate corrosion problems. Any time you disconnect a plug connection squirt some grease into the socket so that when it is put back together the pin will get coated and push the and coat the socket as they slide together.

All good advice.

I'd probably add that you might want to have a bike shop put a good meter on it to be sure you're getting the correct readings...

After, you figure out where your loose wire is, since it's that problem that leaves you stranded...

Thanks guys I did check the battery posts and cleaned them.I pulled off the ground it was mounted to a bolt on the oil tank.I found a film of oil there so I cleaned it and filed it to.I couldn't get the side covers off so I didn't get to clean the positive connection yet.The wire under the seat at the bottom of the tank that you unplug when you take the tank off,is that a ground?I did take the tank off to change the plugs a couple of weeks ago and I was wondering if I might of lost connection there. The high voltage charging I thought maybe from the low battery charging.

Cliff's advice.....a-ok. Additionally the grounds should be checked, or any suspect wireing. For corrosion on terminals, I use regular old white vinigar. Try to dip soak them in a cup or container that will work, using houshold white vinigar, it'll remove all the greenish greasy grunge and leave the terminals baby butt new, ideal for possative connection surity. That would be first on the check, second would be in the area of the regulator.

Where dose the wire that splits off of the ground wire go?And how do you take off the side cover?I took out the side bolt and tried to pull it off,but it wouldn't come off.I was scared of breaking something if I used to much force. And how do I test the regulator?

left cover just the 1 screw, and pulls out, held in by rubber grommets. Right, cover screw , then you have to look from the left side and there will be a 8mm hex head that still holds right cover on, use a flashlight if ya have trouble seeing that internal bolt. Good lighting goes a long way.

Thanks Urbman I was trying to take off the right side first that explains why it wouldn't come off.

Thanks Urbman I was trying to take off the right side first that explains why it wouldn't come off. What do you think about the high voltage?Could it just be high because of the low battery charge?I know I haven't seen a regulator fail this way since they replaced the mechanical ones with electronic ones. But never say never. Please don't think I'm contradicting anybody I'm just bouncing ideas out there.
