Non R* not running properly. 1 Year, 11 Months ago
My brother and I finally got his 1980 XS1100 out of storage about 12 days ago and it doesn't run correctly. It runs on cylinders 1 and 2, 3and 4 are completely fouled with gas. He changed the plugs. It was stored with sea foam in the gas and he ran it for 5 or 10 before putting it away. I'm thinking I should just do a carb clean. I've done it a bunch of times between my old clunkers and his and my buddies shop. I guess I just need practice typing.

coils a good check, but probably them old carbs. Clean 'Em up. Does that one have points? Another good check. Our 81 XS650 shakes the points around a bit.

It has 2 coils electronic ignition and lots of spark. I'm sure it just needs a carb clean. Been there done that.

Thanks for the link Jade. I'll probably have to do that one of these days.

I had an 80 xs1100 I sold to get my R* you guys need to visit http://www.xs11.com/
They have the answer for sure!
Start with triple cleaning those carbs, if it's been sittin that is usually 90% of the problem. Then when you get it running good you will need to do the clutch mod (all the instructions are on their site) because the clutch will slip because of weak springs it is a known problem.
Change the lube in the middle gear box...they have been known to lock up while your rolling at 70+.
Thay are also a great group of guys- almost as good as the folks on this site... almost!
Good luck and stay safe, that XS1100 is a rocket when it hooks up.

Thanks Tusler. I didn't find the clutch mod but I only gave the site a cursory look. I know the XS11 is a rocket. I still have my old one besides my brother's. My sister who has never ridden thinks I should give her mine as her first bike. That ain't gonna happen.
