Carb Leaking Fuel 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Need some help. Was backing the bike out of the driveway and noticed a trail of fuel. Looked down and it was pouring from the air cleaner. Got home from work, pulled the air cleaner off, and it pours out the intake of the carb, but only when the bike is vertical, not when it's on the kickstand. If I turn the key off it still does it. I'm thinking I've got a vacumme leak somewhere, but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before I went back out. (It's still over 100 here in phx and it's hot in that garage!

any help is appreciated!

Could just be trash in the needle and seat. Did you take it for a quick spin to see if it stopped? Sometimes a quick aggressive ride will move trash through and you'll be fine. Give it a try. BB

If it turns out to not be dirt in needle & seat then you likely have the dreaded carb puke fuel issue many R*'s have esp in extreem heat cond like in AZ where you are. I was in Az in August 1995 & it was 100 deg 10pm at night & 125 deg in the afternoon ,UMPH!!!!!!

My 06 silverado used to puke fuel out all over the place post hot shut down 4 of 5 tims i turned it off woithout the elec f-pump being on.

I 1st extended the overflow hose that runs from carb to back of aircleaner to below the bike frame to remove the fire hazard of fuel hitting hot motor.

Then i proceeded to insualte the entire fuel system with hi tech space age 2k degree heat insulating material .

Used 3 layers on all fuel lines inbetween cyls and fuel lines going to fuel petcock and going onto carb too.

I also insualted the float bowl and main carb body i could get to with caqrb still on bike and where it didnt interfear with throttle calbes etc.

I then insualted the metal casing on the elec fuel pump along with the fuel fliter and fuel lines going to f-pump/fuel filter/petcock too.

I also insualted the stock heat shield thats inbetween the f-pump /fuel filter & the cyls too.

It was kinda tight but i was still abile to get the stock chrome cover back onto the f-pump & fuel filer .

With stock lrg aircleaner and f-pump cover installed you really cant see any of the insulation material accept for whats on the fuel lines at f-pump which doent look bad to me,the insulation comes in silver or blk color.

When i fully/properly insualted the fuel system on my bike all the carb puking fuel stopped, even in recent 95 deg HHH temps the carb didnt puke a drop of fuel at all post hot shut downs like it used to do.

Many people here in RSC say what i did wont work or cant cure carb puke but you know what,it worked in my bikes carb puke case 7 actions/results speak louder then words in my book & i got best results possible with n omore carb puke post my insualting job.

I feel its when people try the insualtion thing that they dont insualte the entire fuel system like i did esp using tripple layers on metal fuel nline inbetween cyls and on carb & float bowl that all see extreem heat all the time along with also maybe not using as good an insualting material like i did too. That collectively could be the real reasons that hasn't worked for anyone else here in RSC that tried it prior to me because maybe i did a better job insulating the complete fuel system and not just parts of it likemother did along with also me maybe using a better/superior insualting material too resulting in me being successfull in the end where other weren't.

On 2nd thought next time i have the fuel tank off for any reason i am going to also clean the bottom of it so i cam apply the adheasive backed insulating materail to the underside oif the fuel tank to also keep the incomming fuel cooler too. The motor is only a coule inches below the fuel tank which also heats up the fuel tank and fuel in it too preheting the fuel prior to it entering the fuel pump/bikes fuel system in general which isnt a good thing either.

So give that a try ,only take approx 1.5 to do and $20 for the hhi tech space age 2k deg adheasive backed insulatng material/tape avail at autozone/sumit etc in silver or blk color. It come ina roll thats approx 1.5" wide and 20 ft long. I used basically all of the insulation tape material on my bikes fuel system.

Let us know if you decide to try this out and if it stops your bikes carb puke issues . But remeber you have to use the same space age 2,000 deg insualting material i used and also ensure you fully insualte the entire fuel system like i stated in did inc tripple layering it on all fuel lines inbetwene the cyls which is key along with insualting with layer the complete/rest of the fuel system as i already explained.

But i am dying to get someone with a lagit carb puke issue to try my insulating proceedure out closely following my instructions and usng same insulating materail to see if they get same results with carb puke fixed like i did.

It was a great relief for me when i got the carb puke fixed with only 1.5 hrs work and $20 for the insulating material. I say that because if the insulation didnt fix it i was really considering getting rid of te bike because thats just unacceptable IMHO . But lucky for me its a thing of the past untill maybe the insulaton get's a few yrs old and maybe falls off due to the extreem heat it see's needing a reapplication . That's not that big of a deal IMHO either vs getting a new more expensive HD i really can't afford anyway that may also not be any better of a bike in the long run either for whatever the reason.

Good luck on what ever you decide to do.

Scott
