Re:Water in gas tank ? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
I just returned from a ride around Lake Superior, 2019 miles. Nort of Duluth MN we ran into rain and as I was riding in Duluth I was on reserve, still had a third of a tank of fuel. Bike started to sputter and lose power. I was able to get to the side of the road by pulling the chock out and quick switched to the main from reserve and the bike straightened out. I had this happen once before after an extended ride in the rain. After filling it up I would run a bit on reserve and then switch back to clear out any moisture in the bottom of the tank. My question is where is the water entering my tank coming from. Is it getting throught the gas cap or the vent hose on top of the tank?

There is water in the gas that you buy from the station. When you let the bike sit for a while the water/gas separate out.

I have had this happen once before after riding in a good rain for several hours so I doubt if it is a water in gas I bought. I onder if a little water gets in through the vent and if I were to cover the hose end with a piece of cloth. Just too much of a coincidence to be water from the filling station.

condensation is the primary reason. One reason to always keep gas tank always full to prevent condensation from happening -
I reread the question and my response is more towards why water is in gas so it doesn't answer your question
