Did a few maintenance needs today! 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Well I'm taking the Roadie on an 11 hour road trip next weekend to Birmingham, AL. for the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival. I decided today would be a good day to change my oil and change gear oil for the transfer case. Ive changed the oil twice before, but never the gear oil. That was pretty interesting...always fun to learn new stuff.

Thanks to all the threads here it all went smoothly! Well of course I ran into a few bumps in the road here and their, but nothing a few beers couldn't fix.

Unfortunately I put in four quarts of oil and its not quite enough. I'm checking the oil with the bike leveled out, and it's just barely touching the dip stick. No big deal though, ill just put a bit more in it.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

HEheee

I changed mine again today too, its a new bike for me and I considered that first oil change 1200 miles ago a flush, cheap light wal-mart oil and a Big Wal-mart filter, it came out a nice an brown and the autumn sunlight passed thru it not clear but transparent.

Now we got some Castrol GTX and a Napa Gold filter . I followed the tech article regarding 4qts thats what I did first time, no problems so I did it again .

Seems to be mine field subject here, I'm half afraid to do a search and see what went wrong .

I have seen it related to the Silver Bullet-SVS

Even with this method I get different readings.

Unless you are leaking oil or blowing out mosquito killing clouds of smoke, use 4 qts, screw on the cap and don't take it off til next time you change the oil.

You added the right amount of oil just the wrong type. That fancy castrol gtx is great for cars but suck for bikes, they have a bunch of additives and detergents that cause clutch slippage. If you want to go economical on an oil change go with rotella, they even have a synthetic which runs pretty good.

Castrol GTX will not effect the clutch it contains no friction modifiers and meets Yamaha specified service ratings .

Detergents are not a factor in determining motorcycle oil compatibility .

I change the oil 2 or 3 times a season so I'm not concerned with synthetics .

I prefer to spend the extra money on a better filter .

Most oil hype falls under marketing and personal preference we just love to attach human emotions and conceptions to our machinery, when in reality all we need to focus on is the API service rating and its pretty hard to find a product that doesn't fulfill the Yamaha Guidelines.

But thanks for the tip .

See, I sure am glad I have y'all on here. I would have gone out and bought another quart of oil.

Old Dog, thanks for the video! It was very helpful.

I wound up using a supertech filter with Shell Rotella T6 synthetic oil.

Maybe it's the bike, dunno, the first (last) time i put it in my 1400 intruder it acted all sorts of not good. Yeah, so maybe it's just a suzi thing. Just stuck with what I know works.

Always good to keep an open mind, thanks.
