You really want to do it right? Then every time you drain your oil send a sample out to get analyzed. You will then know more than you ever want to!

Excellent idea! A good lab can usually pinpoint the reason for any abnormal findings and forewarn of a possible failure situation in the making. Lot easier to replace a couple of bearings or something ahead of time than to repair a shelled engine.

Although doing it every change could get expensive.

I'm just a basic member on Delphi so can only search back 3 months. I'll bet someone like Tim could find it.

I don't know about the rest but I know the K&N isn't. For the Road Star the K&N part is a KN-303 or 303C if you want chrome.

Only if you never ever ever change it.

The key is to change it. The only one I won't use is the fram. I've cut several filters open and the fram has cardboard end caps on the filter media. Might be fine for a liquid cooled bike.

Ok on a side note. One of these sites said we should change our filters twice as often as we do the oil when running advanced syn oil. How much oil will we lose if we just unscrew the oil filter and put a new one on?

I've done that on long trips and put about 4oz's back in. Check it after riding and it should be some where in the cross hatch area which is ok. You can also have the new filter ready with oil already in it in which you'll add less.
