Recall work 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Well I was doing some reading on the forum and just realized my Roadie is included in the tranny recall . I don't have a punch on my VIN plate...so I'm going to call Yamaha's 1-800 number tomorrow to see if its been done or not. I'm taking a ride to New Orleans in May...and thatd be my luck to all of a sudden break down.

The only thing that really sucks about this is that I JUST changed my oil yesterday and used an expensive oil (im not saying which one, as to not start an "oil argument"

I'm thinking if I have to take it in to get the work done...they wont reimburse for the oil and want to use Yamalube. Any comments on this guys?

Oh and has anyone heard good things about the dealership in Tyler, TX. I hate the guys at the one in Longview...they are very unfriendly people.

Thanks again guys and gals

Only thing I know is, make them put in whatever oil you want.....even if you have to buy it and take it to them. You have a lot of Texans on here, they should be able to help you out.

Re:Recall work 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Just two weeks ago I had my '99 RS tranny recall work done. Course I live in Wisconsin so I can't recommend anyone in TexASS.

My dealer, Rock River Powersports in Jefferson, Wisconsin did a bang up job. How good were they ? Did the tranny recall work, asked me if I wanted dino or synthetic oil on the refill (told them synthetic) and they didn't even charge me for the synthetic oil change "upgrade". What' next ? I also told them to do the oil drive gear upgrade since the 99/00 model year gear was a weak link. Thought I'd have to pay for the upgrade.....nope....taken care of ! Well, I'm on a roll eh ? Then after it was all put back together the starter wouldn't turn over consistently. They had a guy locally rebuild the starter and I thought $75-100 dollars for the rebuild. Nope.......included in the recall work I guess. To be honest with you I didn't ask. I asked for the keys and ZOOM, I was gone !

Minus my defective fuel pump that stranded me last week my recall work was golden !

If I decided to do this...what parts would you recommend I go with? I didn't know that they were going to tear that far into the engine. Should I do just HC pistons? Or cams also...

I also think I'm going to wait until after my trip to get it done. That way I can work out any kinks. I know it's a risk...but Ive been riding it over a year now and its been OK. Knock on wood.

But who knows! maybe its been done already and they forgot to stamp or mark the VIN

There's more than a few folks out there who wish they'd never installed HC pistons - harder to start, premium fuel and there have even been some bad piston failures.

They don't open the cam cover so there might be an extra charge for replacing the cams and lifters.

The oil pump gear is something you want to replace for sure. Because mine was so old I had the large oil line that runs under the right side of the engine replaced.

It'll have new rings and tranny parts so for the 1st 600 miles take it easy so those parts can be polished in. Basically the same break-in as when it was new.

Yes, call the 800 yamaha number and give them your vin number and they can tell you weather its been done or needed to be done.

i would not have the big bore kit installed even though one is offered from patrick racing but then i am NOT a fan of the je pistons they use and sell since that is the failure i had (not ther'e fault).the wiseco pistons are less money less weight(means more power)higher compression(10.25/1 je to 10.50/1 wisco) wiseco has smaller piston skirts( less heat due to less ficton points)and the wiseco pistons have a better highly polished finish(less carbon build up)

the starting issue i got afterward was the starter relay would burn out due to it heating up since you have to hold the starter button longer to get the bike to turn over.

as for the starting issues afterward i had them. there are choices here for you too you can go to a high out put starter $150.00 or there is another way wich most here recommend here to do anyway, that is to upgrade to a 310cca battery and upgrade the battery cables.i upgraded the battery maker i went from a yusa 280cca to an interstate 280cca and then i only upgraded the pos. cable to the relay and have not had an issue since.
