If you were going back to stock carb system. . . 1 Year, 7 Months ago
I have another post detailing some issues I may have or may be inconsequential with an 01 Roadstar with an S&S carb. I am tetering on the fence to go back to an OEM carb set-up. I thought I might post a seperate thread as it deals more with the OEM side. I was thinking (dangerous) that some who had no interest in the S&S thread might chime in here. If that is not proper please let me know.

I am trying to figure out all that I would have to buy. Obviously, I would need an OEM carb with the TPS, carb heater, and attached stuff. Also, need a different air filter box and cover. Should probably replace the carburetor joint / mainfold (old and hard)? I already have the fuel pump assembly. New throttle cables yes / no? Would you reinstall the air induction system? Currently there are allen head capscrews installed in the motor where the elbows should be - not too sure how that worked. Is ther anything I am missing or you would suggest? The carb would be used, but came off a running wrecked bike, so again I would be going blind into whether it had already be jetted. The wrecked bike looks to have aftermrket longshots pipes on it, as you can see in my sig pic I have a little different pipes.

What am I missing? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
Mike

Hey again Mike.
Your OEM Carb will need a working TPS. I think you can do without the carb heater unless you ride in the Cold.

I would definitely replace the old hardened manifold. Curt is highly skilled at porting the OEM manifolds. He'll see this and chime in.

As for Air Box, There are several K&N Chrome Universal Air filters that can be had for around 40 to 50 dollars. They work great.

You'll need a Jet kit. Most seem to prefer the Baron's kit.

As far as the AIS, most of us have taken them off. I've never heard of anyone whe put one back on. Most don't re install the fuel pump either. Instead we install a better flowing Needle Valve in the fuel inlet so it can gravity feed.

Most important detail; If you drillout the opening in your tank vent tube, keep some grease or vaseline on the drill bit and drill Slowly. Gas + Heat + Spark = Boom

Hope this helps,
Spydr

Wow, that starts adding up. The idle adjustment and Choke are on cables also. Hopfully that would come with the carb.

You still have the plugs to plug the TPS and heater in?

I would not replace the AIS as you are running an aftermarket pipe. It would tend to pop through the exhaust alot with the AIS installed. Propipe, yes? It's the best power & torq pipe there is.

Oh, I forgot to mention;

Whether you need new cables or not depends on the ends that attach to the carb. My guess is that you won't have to change them.

Buy a new manifold port it and buy a Mikuni 42 HSR and a TPS. There are how to's in the tech articles and you will be very pleased with it. I am sure in the right hands the S&S could be made to work well but we know the Mikuni cabs better here. You might pick up a Mikuni 40 CV cab which is the OEM for the R* on e-bay. We can help you with any Mikuni you get.

Well I pulled the tank again tonight, I do have both the TPS and carb heater plugs, they were taped and shoved up under the backbone. It looks like a couple of resistors were soldered in to the old TPS pigtail but they will unplug and go away peacefully if I go this way. Looks like the tank vent has already been drilled and the filler cap is vented. There is only one throttle cable now for the S&S carb, so new cable set would be a must. Will have to find T/C clips too, as from my parts book, it looks like they have been removed. Does anyone have a pic of the K&N universal airbox / filter mentioned? What does the 42 give over the 40?

Again thanks for all of the help and advice.

This is one of the Universals that I mentioned;

This is the model I use. There is also an Oval one, 4"X7".

As far as the Throttle cable, you really only Need the pull cable.
