K&N RK-3905-1 air filter 1 Year, 8 Months ago
I have searched for a couple of hours and can't see to find exactly what I am looking for, sorry if this has been asked many times before. Please don't shoot the newbe . . .

Is anyone using the K&N RK-3905 air filters on your bike? http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RK-3905-1 Is there any advantage / disadvantages over the K&N that is shaped like the OEM paper filter? The installation instructions show using OEM airbox with this filter also. Would jetting be required with this filter assy?
If anyone has a reasonably closeup picture of a bike using this flter setup I would really appreciate seeing it.

Thanks again for all of your assistance!
Mike

you are only using the stock filter back plate. And yes, you must jet, no if's and or buts. And that is not shaped like the OEM. It is shaped for the perimeter shape of the back plate. Suggest a Barons jet kit vs the dyna jet kit. The Barons uses mikuni jets and will have the size that will be needed. The Dj kit has either too small or too large of jets to use so you would still need to buy the correct main jet with the DJ.

the 3905 is not the one that fits in a stock filter housing, this one is very similar to Baron's big air kit. 2 different filter elements. It is the stock air housing that is restricting air flow intake, this 3905 is an open filter and the carb has to be jetted for more air flow.

I figured it would have to be rejetted. I was wondering if there would be enough noticable performance difference with this style K&N air filter and rejetting to make it worthwhile over just getting the K&N OEM style filter to replace the OEM paper filter. I had read the installation instructions and understood that the OEM air box cover would not be reused and I would only use the OEM back. My question is does this stick out a lot farther than the OEM box and be in the way of your leg. How does this compare in performance and protruding wise with Baron's filter?

I personally don't have one but Ive seen one and it doesn't look like it protrudes any more than stock.
performance wise just doing the air filter and rejet won't gain you much. If you want more then you need a ported manifold and high performance CDI box. If you want more than that then you'll have to go into the engine

with air kit, pipes and a dyna3k, and properly jetted, you should get about a 15 to 20% increase in hp

I have the Barons big air kit with a re-jet and can tell you I can feel a big difference in power. The Air cleaner assembly in the Big air kit does'nt stick out as far.I have more leg room than I had with the stock air cleaner.

Okay, I have my finger on the button to commit to buy for a Barons jet kit to go with my K&N-3905 air kit, PMS thumb screw (just because), new carb joint (which will be ported), new plugs (on the wire between original, Irridium, or E3.36 - read a lot of posts would accept more input here). Going to cough up for new throttle cables over the used set that came with the salvage carb and also change over to Erb's vent style from the other thread. I already have Vance & Hines 2:1 pipes installed. Funds are drying up to get this puppy back up and running so have to draw the line somewhere and pick up when feeling flush again. That said, I do not want to have to undo and redo items later on.

Questions:
1. If I do not buy a dyna3k now and put the rest of this stuff on, if/when I do install a dyna3k, will I have to rejet again?

2. Note anything I am blatently missing?

3. I have a line on a BAK air kit and jet kit that looks worth the money, would it be a step up or about the same as the K&N-3905?

4. As mentioned above, any +/-'s on the type of plugs to buy?

Thanks, Mike

1. No.

2. Nothing comes to mind.

3. If you have a stock OEM carb then you'll need the jet kit. The OEM jetting will not work.

4. I've noticed a slight improvement with the Iridiums over the NGK.
