Regular Maintenance 1 Year, 4 Months ago
Trying to get a few parts together for some regular maintenance that I'll be doing here shortly and have a couple of questions.

1. Plan on using Amsoil MC 10W-40 in it but would like to get some opinions on going with 20W-50 instead. I ride a bit in the winter here in Kansas so the 10W-40 seems good for that but are the engines quieter with 20W-50? 20W-50 still good for riding in the 20s?

2. Plan on going with NGK Sparkplugs P/N DPR7EA-9. Any others work better?

3. Need to change my fuel filters that have never been changed. Yamaha filters or something else?
P/N 1FK-24560-10-00 from Yamaha for the one by the fuel pump? The book also talks about another filter that requires carb removal but I can't find that P/N or even if it needs replacing. Ideas?

I have an 2003 Roadstar with 31K on it, any other ideas on what I can take care of to keep me occupied this winter?

Thanks for all the help guys!

Either oils good....I use 20-50 because I just like heavier oil in an air cooled engine..it also made it quieter...but I dont ride in the winter. Usually 40s is all I will see.
Spark plugs... I started using the iridium plugs 2 years ago....they still look new and I noticed a difference right away when I put them in. Bike sounded better as soon as I started it...youll get different opinions... but it was worth the money to me. They last forever, milage came up 2 mpg's. ...engine seems stronger. I guess cause its 'combusting' better.
I use yamaha fuel filter.....the one in the carb is just a screen at the gas inlet. Some guys pull them out for better flow. Mines still there. Havent had any problems...I suppose next time I pull the carb I might pull it...just to prevent a " clog on the road".

If you have the extra cash go with the suggested irridium plugs but if no extra cash go with the std NGK's.

On the oil if you regularly ride in 20-30 deg weather/temps no way on 20-50 and yes the 10w-40 amsoil mcv would be a much better choice for cooler temps.

But if your bike sits outside in 20-30 deg temps another choice would be to run Shells full syn 5w-40 rotella that has 1300ppm zddp per Shell oil tech dept so it has the minimum zddp required to properly protact the R*'s FT cam & liftere R*.

The 5w base wt oil in the shell syn will be a little easier to spin over in 20-30 deg temps then the the 2x thicker 10w base wt oil in the amsoil.

Max air larger hi capacity battery-starter cables, optional hi perf 310cca battery,a battery maintainer to keep battery fully charged-warm in 20 deg temps can also help a R* fired up in 20-30deg F temps.

Thunder fire hi trq starter & warrior starter relay would be a great help getting a R* fired up in 20 deg f temps too.

Add stem bearings, grease fittings in the neck and fork oil and you got my winter project(s).

I'm running the same as Blacrodie but I am in Texas and it stays warm down here. You can go with the 10W-40 in the winter and 20W-50 in the warmer months and do just fine.

My bike began to get hard starting when cold weather hit, I had the dealer change my oil for lighter oil. Starts just fine now. They use Yamalube though.
When I change back to summer oil I'm going as Scott suggested.

I have heard a lot of good things about the iridium plugs and I think I will give them a try just for kicks and giggles.

Don't look like I'm in a big rush since snow is on the car tops this morning. Bluk!

I use Amsoil 20 / 50 in Brithish Columbia and ride as low as freezing with no problems. I find my bike does not shift as smoothly with 10/40
