Oil use 1 Year, 3 Months ago
How much oil do you guys have to add between oil changes? Do i need to let it run for a while then check the oil ? I seem to be using oil but cant find any leaks and im not smoking. Bike runs like a champ. Am i losing oil from the crankcase vent? This seems to be the only place i see any oil outside the engine. [file]

I put 4 quarts in and never ever check my oil. Too much of a pain to check on these bikes and if not done correctly, it gives false readings which leads people to believe they are using oil.
Fill it and forget it...

I highly doubt you are leaking or burning up oil. There is a very specific way to check oil level, if not done properly you will get a false dip stick level.
141k miles, 4 qts and never check in-between, in fact, have never checked oil level.

What about the oil lost from the crankcase vent? Is that just an insignifacant amount? And thanks erbman for your help with my rejet. My scoot runs like never before. U r the man

it's more or less just oil vapors, unless you over fill the oil, then it would be a little more, but still nothing so much that would require adding oil between changes.

Checking isn't all that difficult, if you feel the need. After a run... just come to a stop, and let it idle only... no blips... for at least 30 seconds, then turn it off.

Then, with the bike standing UPRIGHT, (putting the stand on a sideways brick works, but be careful), steadying your bike level, like under a lift, unscrew the stick, wipe, and then stick it. Don't screw it in. If the oil's anywhere in the crosshatch pattern... you're good.

Check hot. Idle for at least 30 seconds. Stick it with the bike level. If it's on that l-o-n-g crosshatch pattern anywhere... you're fine.

It's a bit of work, and it kinda stinks. And it'll read differently on the stick everytime, so don't add any just because it appears "low" on the crosshatch pattern.

(I hate to say this, but a very good friend went the change-out-4-qts-and-forget-it route, and he DID blow up his motor, as he ran it out of oil a few thousand miles later. Cost him $2,200) Moral of that story is: Don't ever check your oil... at your own peril!

Oh, Oh, Oh... and NEVER, EVER have the bike running and the oil cap loose or off.

Do NOT ask me how I know this for an absolute fact.

Same method I use. Although I do leak a bit out of the carb area on long rides..so I check it once a month or so, and cleanup my exhaust from the little bit of blowback.
