oil question...with a twist 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Sorry to bring up the oil topic again, but my curiosity got the best of me today.
Here is how is come about.......

I uncovered my bike ( '06 R* ) last week to put it on the lift for it's spring cleaning and check-up. I noticed a few drops of oil on the floor where it sat all winter and found out the drain plug on the engine was the cause. That's what I get for changing the oil last December ( mobil 1 v-twin ) and not replacing the sealing ring. I bought a new magnetic drain plug with a 14mm bolt head and new sealing washers and changed it today. I put the oil back in it since it has less than 500 miles on it.
Now, being I didn't start the engine before changing the drain plug, the oil is cold. I put the oil back in it and then started the bike, let it run a few minutes and checked the oil level. The level was just above the add mark by a few notches and that got me thinking that when it's at operating temp, it should be fine.

My question is...... just how much will the oil level rise when it's hot as opposed to when it's cold?
It's one of those questions that I never thought about before and now it has my curiosity.

Thanks,
RussB

Russ, it can be a tough one to answer simply because of the lubrication system of the Roadstar. It'll leave a different amount of oil in the crank and tank every time it's shut down.

The best thing to do is to run it/ride it for at least 15 minutes, 'til fully warm, and do the proper oil level check.

After warm, idle for at least 30 seconds with no throttle blips. Shut it off. Stand it upright, and stick it without screwing it in.

If it's on the crosshatch of the stick. It's good. Do the process again, and it'll be somewhere else on that stick.

thanks for the quick response, I know it's fine since it's in the cross hatches when cold, after running it for just a few minutes and letting it idle like the book says... I am just one of these types that think about stupid things like this LOL...
When I changes it in December, I added 4 quarts only and I know it didn't leak but a few drops, the bottom of the engine was still dry so it wasn't dripping last time I rode it.
