Spring start-up issues... 1 Year, 3 Months ago
Hi,
Don't know if this is the right forum for this, but I'll start here.
Had winterized my '08 fuel injected bike, took gas tank off, fogged cylinders,
etc. Today, put battery in, attempt to start, electrics are acting 'funny', bike
has power and turns over (slowly), but does not start and does not sound 'right', and
then the speedo will go thru its initial thing where it goes all the way to the right and
back again, multiple times. The fuel tank is full, the console fuel light flashes though, but
the gas guage shows full as well.

Since I am not really mechanically inclined, what are my options here?
Call dealer and have them come get the bike and fix whatever I screwed up?

I would make sure the battery is fully charged and the battery cables are tight and clean.
I assume you left the battery on a battery tender.

I had only put the battery on the charger last nite. It is the same kind of 'gel' charger
that the shop uses. charger indicates good battery and full charge, but definitely is not a
'strong' turnover of the bike. cables are indeed tight and clean, just put battery back in this morning.

Kev:

Just sounds like a flat battery to me.

One of the only things I do religiously to "Winter'ize" my bike is to keep the battery fully charged. That, and I start it up every two-three weeks and bring it up to operating temperature. Taking the tank off, etc. might be a little over-kill.

If that battery goes flat, sometimes they have issues getting all the way back to full.

Let us know how it turns out.

I've got an '08 FI R*.

I'm wondering why the speedo does it's dance multiple times. Did you get the electronics hooked up nice & tight when you put the tank back on?

Hi,
for clarification, it is a roadstar, and as mentioned above an '08 fi.
I think it is flat battery too, so I have battery out and charging on car charger for a couple
hours now. I believe all connections are secure, but I will double check each and every one also.
I will post after a couple hours of charging battery and let you know how it goes, thank you all
very much for your help so far, I do appreciate it.

You can get the battery checked for dead cells at an auto parts store for free.

As others have said, could be battery issues and/or loose or dirty cable connections.

Yeh, almost certainly battery... and if you didn't strive to keep it charged over the winter, that will shorten its life as well. Ya gotta keep it on a tender, or run the bike every couple of weeks for awhile. Storage batteries generally aren't happy to be out of service for more than 30 days at a time, and if they're flat after no use for about 30 days, then chances are good it was about all done anyway.
