About a month ago, my shift pedal shaft, sheared off about 70 miles from home. I managed to rig something up to get me home, but it meant I had to start off in third gear and ride home using only third and forth. As a result, my clutch gave out on me *just* as I was pulling into my driveway. It turns out I fried my clutch so bad that the friction compound on several plates disintegrated; leaving nothing but the bear metal plates and all the crispy fried friction compound inside the clutch housing. I removed as much as of the "grit" I could find when I replaced the clutch and did not find any in the oil when I drained it however, I'm beginning to wonder if any of the friction material that got away, is now circulating in my motor and causing *serious* irreparable damage. Like fried bearings or scored cylinders or worse. I obviously replaced the oil and filter when I replaced the clutch. but is there anything else I should have done, or should do, or should be concerned about? And if so, short of tearing down my engine, is there anything I can do? I put everything back together and hoped for the best, but every so often, I feel like the motor is running real rough. Did I screw the pooch?

Sounds bsd, might be time to do a complete rebuild.
Can't take any chances; unless you go through the whole motor.

i dunno what oil you normaly run but if it were my bike i would go to wal mart and pick up some of that rottela oil alot of folks run and do a oil change after a 10-15 mile ride to flush all the old stuff out and repeat untill your satisfied you got it all out. right or wronge, in my head it makes sence and thats what i would do

The filter should have pretty much gotten it all... it goes there first.
I wouldn't think that you'd have a problem. If you did, it would reveal itself by rod/bearing knock type sounds... but, then, gee, as much noise as our motors make now, you may never tell the difference.
Change it all out and ride it.

I'm reading the oil flow chart and it looks like the oil runs through the filter after tranny so you probably are good. Unless I am wrong, the grit should be cleaned by filter before recycling through the rest of the engine. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.
The only other thing I can think of is the bypass on the oil filter. If the filter got plugged, it will go into bypass and dump dirty oil back into the engine without filtering.

Just for my own info., I checked the manual, and yes, the pump picks it up and sends it to the filter first.

If it'll make you feel better, see the oil flow charts on pages 2-26 and 2-29 of the service manual.
The main oil flow out of the pump is right to, and through, the lowest external oil line (not one of the chrome tubes), and directly to the oil filter.
If you toasted your engine... it'll certainly let you know. Looser tolerances will make more noise.

I'm thinking you're OK unless the motor is making expensive noises. Here's what I'd do.... drain old oil and change filter (presuming you've done that already). Fresh oil and filter and run the bike for about 25 miles to warm it up thoroughly. Add a little MMO or your preferred engine oil flush in the recommended dose and run for a few more miles, drain oil and put in new oil and new filter again. If there's any bad stuff in that treated oil you drain out, you might want to worry. If not I'd say you're golden. Then do a compression check and check your plugs. If everything's within normals, get on it and ride. Change your oil and filter again in 3000-3500 miles just to be sure. These engines are tough and will tolerate a lot. We probably baby them more than necessary. I wouldn't do an engine rebuild unless you start making expensive engine noises or notice a real significant loss of power.

Do you still have the filter? It would be interesting to cut it open and see what you find. I wonder if there is a screen on the oil pump intake. Would be a bummer to have that stop up.

A second on the "cut open the filter". I would change the oil every few hundred miles for a while. Oil and filters are a LOT cheaper than metal !!!!!!!!
