Wouldn't dropping the needle lean it up more? I'd try it on the 4th groove from the top - i.e. the 2nd groove. I ran mine on that and it was too rich so put back to 3rd.

Did I say dropped.. meant raised, it was on 4 down from the top and I moved it to the 5th down.. just got back from a test drive to the local Yamaha shop (ordered the Enricher cover). Still backfiring a bit on decel, I need to let it cool down then back the PMS out another 1/4 or 1/2 turn.
The part# is 3LD-14958-00-00

I picked up the diaphram cover today and since the weather is going to be iffy for a bit I tore my R* down. The needle change didn't do much, seemed to get less MPG's and I could smell gas after riding, so I moved it back to the 4th slot. Also, since I had it apart I took the intake manifold off, this was new last year, I picked one up and ported it but I didn't catch the "important" point about new manifolds.. the flanges. I am now 99% sure that my lean condition can probably be traced back to not polihing/sanding the flanges. Just to be sure I picked up some Permatex Hylomar gasket sealant and put a very thin coat on.

Still trying to get rid of the backfire.. just read a post that said the K&N filter that uses the stock filter box doesn't require a Stage 2 carb re-jet even with aftermarket pipes. Anyone have an opinion on that?
