Re-oiling and assembling Maxair filter element 12 Months ago
I finally decided to take my Maxair foam air element off, clean it, and apply new oil.

I took the foam element out of the screen to make cleaning easier. It seems tough to get it centered back in the screen. And fitment looks critical as uniform seal around edge in necessary.

Anyone have some tips - other than walking away from it after first try?

And shoul I oil before reassembly or after? Is any oil OK?

I clean mine after taking it apart.

I soak mine in Varsol overnight first to break down the old oil and release the dirt better.

Then, wearing rubber gloves, wring it out and wash it with your favourite type of cleaner....simple green etc. Then rinse thoroughly. Press the excess water out between an old towel and let dry overnight.

To re-oil I use Uni Foam Filter oil. It's very sticky. Some use soap....I haven't tried that. Spray an even coat on the outside surface and then work it into the rest of the filter.

To reinstall, I put it in the mesh screen first, by pressing it as evenly as possible into the bottom and then work around to get it up the sides. Then install the plastic backer. I like to leave it so that a bit of excess foam is sticking beyond the mesh. This will give you the good seal against the backing plate that you are looking for.

Hope this was helpfull. AT

Yes it is! I was trying to reinstal foam with the plastic backer.

I have an old K&N kit around somewhere but can't find it. Guess I'll stop by Autozone tomorrow to see what they have.

Thanks About_Time!

Nightstar....I know this probably isn't going to help, but I got it up here at Canadian Tire. That was a while ago now though. Maybe I should take a look soon, since the can is close to empty.

Is it that much different from K&N oil? That's what I just used. Had a little more patience today and got it back together.

I dowsed it pretty good with K&N oil.
