Oil Filter Question 12 Months ago
|
|
|
While changing oil on a Mazda Protege (1.5) I noticed that the filter was the same size threads and rubber gasket as the Super Tech 7317. It is a little shorter though. I bought it at a local independent parts house, says Bumper to Bumper on the ticket and the oil filter is a Parts Master brand, part #61365. $3.88 and made in the U.S. Anyone have any experience with these?

I've seen those on cars in my shop that had their oil changed at a jiffy lube if that tells you anything... Not trying to start a debate on oil filters again, but I'll stick with my wix filters on the bike, and motorcraft on the cars, (which I believe is made by wix too, but not for sure) just out of personal preference.

Already I miss SuperTech. I reckon I'll go to Wix when I run out of ST.

Mazda's use the 6607, which is the same filter as the 7317, but shorter. They are completely interchangeable.
Now that Wal*Mart no longer sells their own ST, I guess I'm going to have to go with another brand.
From a Consumer Reports test years ago, the WIX was the best at that time, and I'm pretty certain they're still real good.
I still have a quite a stock of ST's on the shelf... guess I won't be changing brand anytime soon!

Hmmm, used the cross reference found here and picked up a Bosch 3300 but it does not seem to fit properly and threads do not engage (won't just spin on). I'm not going to use it, having the woman pick up a Fram 6017A because it's in stock. Anybody else have issues with the Bosch filter? Maybe just a crappy thread on the filter I got.

PartsMaster is O'Reillys low cost filter that is supposed to be an entry level filter made by WIX. We've used 100's of them on used cars with no issues. They do seem to be a good filter. The 61365 (and the longer 61356) are listed to fit all the later Nissans, Honda cars, various motorcycles and tractors. I did notice that Wix has changed their catalog lately and they have a different number for Nissans now. When I worked for a Nissan dealer I used Nissan filters om my bikes. Now I'm at a Honda dealer but I refuse to use a Honda filter because most are made by Honeywell which is Frams parent company.
I would be using the PartsMaster on my bike if I hadn't bought a bunch of new SuperTech 7317's at a salvage store for a buck each.
