Problem Shifting 1 Year ago
Hi, i am new in the forum.

Yesterday i bought a 2001 Road Star Silverado. At first ride i had some problem shifting but thought that could be my fault.

As soon as i drove it home, i start having problem shifting. When i try to get first gear, if it is first time i get it in, will work fine but if then i shift to neutral and back to first gear is a pain to get it in. Also shifting up gears form first to second and all the way to 5 gear when i shift i have to leave the shift lever up until i release the clutch if not the gear wont go in, and seem to be in neutral but without the light on.

Going down, will let me down shift normal not needing to leve the lever down to let the gear in. except for the first gear.

So i disarm the shifting lever and re-grease it as the forum says and no improvement. Even try to adjust lever position to assure that full traver was availiable but no luck either.

My feeling is like the travel allowed is not enough or something is bent inside. I hope could be in the shifter side not in the gearbox side since it will need a complete engine tear down to access the parts for inspection,

Has someone had this problem before? is there some test to do to asure is not the gearbox.

Sorry for my english, i speak spanish, and if i need a spare i will have to buy it form the US and wait 15 or more days to arrive home (Costa Rica)

Right now i am a little triste about this situation, i think i screw up buying the bike, but now i need to fix it...

31,000 is not a lot of miles ...these bikes go a long ways .
Most of the time when a recall has been done the dealer is supposed to put a ' punch' mark on the vin number label. I believe it a green mark also.
The recall was for transmission parts that went bad...dont remember which parts. But there were a few cases of the bikes locking up while riding.
All bikes between 99' and 03' were recalled.

Re:Problem Shifting 1 Year ago
I check it and it has no punch mark nor green dot, nothing. I will call Yamaha tomorrow and check for the recall.

But do you thing could be related to something bent? because each gear i tested and work fine, i even got it a 80 mph and beside of some vibration it was fine.

I had an intruder VS1400 and compared to this one had a much better gearbox... i am not afraid of fixing it but here we have no mechanics for such a big engine.

For now my plan is to buy the gasket and take a peek of the shift shaft near the clutch and check if it has abnormal wear and the system...
