07 revving to the limiter 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago

Hi all, first time looking for help or suggestions. So, we are riding to Gilmore's car museum for the antique bike show in Michigan and I'm about 5 miles from Gilmore's. We are on a road that had been recently seal coated. stock bike except for 3" HK's. The bike rev's up to the limiter and I can't stop it. I end up shutting the bike off and pulling into a drive. I start the bike three more times after playing with the throttle and each time it rev's to the limiter. the third time afer moving the throttle, which i had done the previous times, the bike idled down and I didn't have any problems the rest of the trip (380 miles along Michigan's beautiful west coast, South Haven north) It was a hot day (90). i also have trouble starting the bike when it is hot, smell gas and if it doesn't start, i have to choke it. Anybody have any ideas of what caused the over-rev situation... sure makes a guy nervous in a pack of bikes.

Odd, with push/pull cables. Could only be the vacuum actuated slide stuck in its bore.
What else could it be???

Make sure the diaphragm vent on the upper left rear corner of the carb is open to the air, no wasp or spiders nest etc built inside of it. There's a screen inside, and its not uncommon for a critter to build something in it.

When you open this link, scroll down to the pics. Its the little blue thingie marked "vacuum vent" in the upper right hand pic. This should be open to outside air, so the diaphragm can react properly to the air moving through the carb. People have been known to hook a hose on this to, because it just begs for one....don't do that
I don't know if the TPS messing up, would cause this or not???

A stuck slide is the only way to get that much air.

Thanks for the replies, I wasn't getting on it at all, if it was a stuck slide, how would you remedy it in the field? And I will check the diaphragm vent also

I would check to see if there was something close to the throttle linkage (like the clamp for the air cleaner) that it may have got caught on the linkage holding the throttle open. A stuck slide will not do this, it will only rev up if the throttle plate (on the back side of the slide) is opened. A stuck slide alone will allow more fuel into the carb but not more air. Both are needed to rev the motor. If the throttle plate is stuck open it will open the slide giving you more air and fuel. The result will be the engine reving like you described.

Not sure on the throttle stiking but I have had the problem starting it many times when it gets hot. I have had fuel pouring out of the carb as I try to start it and think it may be along the lines of the carb puke issue. I have started shutting the fuel off about 20 seconds before I shut her down and reopen it after I get her started and it seems to be helping.
