Changing Plugs 11 Months ago
I am getting ready to change plugs for my first time on my '08. Is pulling the tank the best method, seems to be the only way? I found the tech article on tank removal to give me a starting point, assume I just take it loose enough to get to the back plugs. Thanks in advance for any tips.

I am leaving the 4th with my wife for Asheville, NC from Indiana. Her Stryker is ready to roll, just getting my Roadie ready. We are getting excited about the trip. Never ridden the Blue Ridge Parkway or the area roads.

You don't have to take the tank completely off. Just take out the bolt at the back of the tank and pivot it up. PITA to disconnect fuel lines and speedo if you don't have to.

Pulling the tank is the best(easiest) method for me. Fortunately, it's not very hard. Turn the fuel off, run the bike until it runs out of fuel. There's one big bolt under the seat, take that off, and lift and slide the tank backwards. There will be your instrument wire bundles, 2 of them IIRC. Undo them and the tank is off. It's literally a 3 minute procedure once you get it down.

Personally, I feel really cramped not taking the tank off to get at the plugs, then you have to hold the tank up the whole time, while it's constantly tugging at the fuel line, only giving you a couple inches of space to work. To each their own though.

Good luck and have fun on your trip!

Thanks blue star and Jay. That's what I was thinking. Didn't seem like a huge pain, just wanted to make sure. Will get it done after work when I change the oil. Appreciate the help!

How do you know when to change the plugs? Is it a mileage thing? Are you just changing them for a tuneup?

FI bikes are a little more trouble than the carbed ones. Plus when I pulled my tank, I had trouble with with speedo and gas gauge not working right. Got that straightened out but it took a couple of days. I won't pull my tank off again unless absolutely necessary. Mine's an 08 too.

Arps, I admittedly am just changing the plugs for the mileage tune-up per manual. But I wanted to try the Iridium plugs so timing is right.

You can check tech article on spark plugs. Pull one and compare to pics for an idea if you are having issues.

I am going to try blue star's suggestion of just removing the lower bolt, and pivoting the tank. No since doing more than necessary

Ah, I missed the 08/FI part, I assumed it was carbed. And yes, my fuel gauge hasn't worked since I last pulled my tank off. I'll get around to it some day, but I usually just run to reserve, then fill 'er up.

Did that one many times but the FI R* is a different story.
