I am getting ready to change plugs for my first time on my '08. Is pulling the tank the best method, seems to be the only way? I found the tech article on tank removal to give me a starting point, assume I just take it loose enough to get to the back plugs. Thanks in advance for any tips.

I am leaving the 4th with my wife for Asheville, NC from Indiana. Her Stryker is ready to roll, just getting my Roadie ready. We are getting excited about the trip. Never ridden the Blue Ridge Parkway or the area roads.

When you get here give me a shout. I can at least give ya some good roads to ride while your here if I can't make it out with ya. How long you staying?

Since you're about to go on a road trip, I would definitely recommend you don't pull the tank. Caused me too much trouble. The service manual also says to just pull the back bolt out and pivot the tank up.

Headed down the 4th of July. Have to head back Sunday the 8th for work on Monday. So not staying as long as I like. We have no definite plans, just plan to ride. I will give you a shout out, and also would appreciate suggestions on roads. Never been there but pics sure look beautiful!

FWIW...I always take the tank off my 05...just makes it easier to see things, reach things and torque the plugs right...only problem I ever had was the last time I changed the plugs I dropped the third (last of course) nut that holds the instrument panel to the tank and couldn't find the summabitch...bought three and keep them handy now...live and learn

I always take the speedo off the tank, and the tank off the bike. I leave the speedo connected to the wires, and lay it up over the bars, or bungee it to the shield to keep it out of the way. As much as paint and tins cost, I feel much better getting the tank clear off, out of the way, and resting on something soft, either on the floor or the bench, where its not going anywhere.
A scratched fuel tank makes for an ugly bike, and you just can't earn back enough "atta boy's" to make up for it.
Besides, with it out of the way, you can take your time cleaning and polishing the rocker covers, and making sure all the grit etc, is out from around the base of the plugs when removing them. JMHO
