Front fork springs with Progrerssive-Rough ride 11 Months ago

Hi All,
Last year I replaced the front forks with Progressive springs and the bike rides hard. Anyone else have this issue? When ever I go over small road humps the bike bars jerk up, no longer an absorbsion of the road with the fron forks. Works great when hard braking but for the norm, no longer a great ride. Any suggestions?
Its a Stock roadstar Silverado 1600 Yr 00.
Thx, Shotgnz

Make sure your oil level is set correct. Did you install the springs, or did a shop or previous owner?

I agree with ace. Also, what wt fork oil you running and how long of a spacer do you have.

+1 with Ace. Had same issue and it was because the fluid level was incorrect.

Hi All,
Did the work myself. Spacer was set to 6.5 need to check how much fluid was installed and what type (weight ) I used.
Shotgnz
So, everyone feels the fluid amount might be the issue?

Very well could be. 5.5” fromt the top of the tube with main springs out and legs fully compressed. Stock was 5wt but almost everyone goes 7 wt-10wt when they change the fluid. Codnt emagine any heavier.

If you don't flush the forks out, and turn them upside down, then "re-prime" the bottom end, it's easy to get it wrong. The air space on top of the fluid gives you a cushion of air to compress easily with the initial spring movement, before the damper rod starts restricting the damping action. In general, lower oil height gives a more supple ride at small movements. Your braking dive may increase just a little, but it will soften up the small movements, and your damping and spring action will be more closely matched. Can't speak to the spacer length, but BlackRain has the skinny on that.
Hope this fixes ya up!
Keep us updated, and we'll get ya squared away.

Hi,
I used 5 w oil PJ-1. Forks were taken completely off and turned upside down to drain the all oil. Dust seals and oil seals were replaced. Checking with a buddy to see how much we added back in. He too did the same thing which his was running hard as well. He cut the spacer down to 2 inches or so, his bike is lowered so I figured that was his issue.

If you are not a bigger rider (like some of us) the suggested pre-load (spacer length) might be a bit much. Most people do go with a 7-10Wt oil, but that's for us bigger guys too. It is important to make sure the tubes are full collapsed when measuring the oil height. I stand them up side by side on the garage floor for this. I use a piece of 1/8" tubing, and bend over a section of coat hangar to the length required for the height, then tape the tubing to the coat hanger wire even with the bottom of it. Over-fill the tubes, then suck back out whatever the tube will draw off the top. this is one of the more accurate ways of getting the oil level even, and replicates the effect of Progressive's "special tool"
