Torque Delay 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I have an '03 Roadstar and it's been running well up until now. When shifting through gears, I release my clutch and hit the throttle, but it seems like it takes awhile for the power from the engine to be transferred to my rear wheel. The engine responds when I hit the throttle, but there is a one or two second delay before I actually feel the acceleration. Doesn't seem to do it if I slowly increase the throttle. Just sucks when trying to pass someone on the highway quickly or get off the line fast. Is this a clutch problem, or a drive belt problem?

First, from Asheville, nc

Second, it sounds like your clutch is slipping under load. First make sure the clutch cable isn't to tight, and second try a good dose of seafoam in the oil and run it for a few miles and then change the oil and filter. If you still get the slippage, then its probably time for a new clutch spring. There are several different choices out there.
If you do a search for clutch spring here on the forum you will get all sorts of info since this is a very common issue.

Sounds like your clutch sure enough. Follow Rogers suggestions and you should find out real fast. Good luck

+3 on the clutch slipping did you change oil recently and use an automotive grade oil instead of MC specific oil? Many of the members here have had the same issue and found that the OEM diaphragm clutch spring is a weak link. Most all have upgrade to the Barnett or Speedstar clutch spring.

I have the same thing, so I'm gentle with the acceleration. Balls to the wall go time throttle, and hte engine will accelerate without the bike. If you listen for it, you can hear a disproportionate change in engine speed to bike speed. I'm going to go the season taking it easy, and do it over the winter. As long as there isn't noticeable slippage, you should be fine as long as you don't gun it at low speeds to get you through for now.

It's a super easy install, takes just a couple hours at most. Just make sure to order a gasket at the same time you order the spring. Could easily be done on a rainy day.

I thought it was an engine-off procedure.

Nope,.pop off the left cover, swap the spring, scrape the gasket, line it all up, button it back together, and done, go for a ride.

Just be careful because there's a sensor wire that goes thru the cover, don't let it stretch, I just used a couple bungee cords to hang the whole cover out of my way, and make sure you scrape off all the old gasket, thats the most tedious part.
