Re:CARB STILL PUKING??? 1 Year, 9 Months ago
Well, I got all the recommended 2000 degree tape triple wrapped fuel line, double wrapped carb, fuel filter and pump. The tank already had a layer of tape on it so I left it alone. I rerouted the vent tube down below the frame. I made about an hour run this am to test it out. The last 8 miles up the mountain is very twisty with a 2200' rise in elevation with speeds from 20-35mph in 3rd gear most of the time. This is where it puked the very first time with my wife on back and upper 90's temps. After arriving today solo and with temps about 10 degrees cooler than before I felt like it probably would not puke today....WRONG!! After sitting for about 15-20 minutes I tried to start the bike...no go, it just cranks but no fire. The second time no start and I smelled fuel...looked down and had a nice cup of fuel deposited below the bike from the new rerouted vent hose...Ugh!!! Guy comes over on his Harley and asks if I have the cutoff switch turned off...I wish! Well I proceeded to explain to him my issue. We talked for the next 15min. and I decided to try again. This time it had cooled off enough to start again and fired right up. I really thought this would fix the problem, now I am scratching my head and guess I will try shutting off the petcock before shutdown next. I installed a new set of NGK plugs and gapped them at.033 and the bike runs flawlessly when it starts. I really thought I did overkill on the heat tape and thoroughly covered everything!! I don't have any stations nearby that have ethanol free gas so that isn't an option. After starting again I ran down the mountain and stopped for some fresh produce about 30 minutes later and was on and off in less than 10 minutes. The bike fired right up with no puking. For me, it seems like after about 15-20 minutes sitting is when mine pukes and always in the mountains. The bright spot was the new long vent tube did its job spewing the fuel underneath the bike instead of on the hot engine.

Scott, I am experiencing the carb puking problem on my 07 R*. Can you send me the information on what you did and how you did it? My e-mail is rush332703@yahoo.com.

Thanks!
Ray

A lot might remember I had serious carb puke. Very serious. off and on, I did it all. Lines, cover them, re route, new float valve, ditch the pump, on and on. Never really cured it although I thought I did a few times.

Now, Once I ditched the Leaky Ben Herr Manifold that was leaking on and off whenever it wanted and could not be stopped for three years. The problem was solved. Never puked since I installed the Factory Manifold with the hylomar sealant.

Why? I am thinking because the bike was on and off running very lean with the intake leaks. This made it run hot enough to boil the gas in the bowl.

Mind you I could tune it all in with jetting, but as the bike went down the road it would start to leak and lean out, sometimes it would and sometimes it would not. With the sealed intake, it runs right and the same ALL The time. And so far not one puke and a very cool bowl from shut down to cold.

So, I seriously suggest investigating a running lean situation.

And this may be why some people complain about it and some don't.

Let the flaming begin.

I feel your pain!!! Rode my 03'star to nevada last aug.Carb was leaking every time I stopped.I think the 110 degree heat had something to do with this.I had to shut off fuel before stopping and this stopped leaking problem.I was able to refire the motor by holding throttle wide open.Techie at dealership said leak was caused by deteriorating seals from using fuel with ethanol? If this is true then carb would leak all the time, however, when I got into cooler weather.... no leaks.

Called this 714 number and all I ended up doing was arguing with some lady who was obviously reading from a script!!! I asked to speak to her supervisor and she said they don't transer to supervisors!!!

When I first purchased bike three months ago I heard something that I believe was puking but never saw anything. I use ethanol free fuel now and haven't heard or seen anything but sometimes when I park in the garage it really smells like gas and then I hear it from the wife.

I only have the Stage 1 stock exhaust mod, OEM K&N air filter, and routed a hose from where carb overflows into the air cover/compartment in a curved vertical position that would sort of create an elbow where if any fuel were to overflow it would have a place to sit and evaporate or maybe just leak drain into the air cover/compartment and not directly on motor/exhaust. If puking gets bad like some of yours has I may have to re-think that and route that hose straight down to the ground.

Haven't had any fuel spill onto hot pipes or leak at all for that matter so that is good but wanted to get some feedback to see what yall think about the 714 call and my current set up.

Some guys here have started turning the fuel off at the petcock a short time before killing the motor. The motor running for a few moments with the fuel off, reduces the amount of fuel in the carb bowl, and line from the fuel pump that runs between the jugs.
Some of us, have simply gotten rid of the fuel pump, and gone "pumpless". It keeps the fuel from being trapped between the jugs. If it needs to expand, it can back up to the tank, instead boiling out through the carb.
The extra air circulation around the jugs(to aid cooling) when the pump is gone is a plus.

Another good reason to go pumpless! I forgot to mention that I do turn the fuel off before stopping the engine. I was taught that since elementary school when I started riding dirtbikes and have done it with all my bikes ever since. Since mine hasn't really become a problem yet I will probably go with the "if it aint broke don't fix it" concept but now I know pumpless will be part of the fix.

When the heat rises, and I've been running the bike for awhile, I have found that turning the fuel off before killing the motor has helped.

Are there any "adjustments" that have to be made after going pumpless?

I changed out the needle and seat for the suzuki 2.5, and vented the cap.

Re:CARB PUKING ? THEN READ THIS . 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi Scott,
I would also like to get directions sent to me about properly insulating the fuel lines and carburetor.
After reading all of the information here, I will be getting a better air cleaner that will allow more ventilation between the jugs. I am also considering going pumpless. It would be nice to open up that side for better ventilation. Are there any tricks a person should know before removing the fuel pump?
