You may also want to check the clutch return spring. Mine was broken and it felt like the lever was a little bit loose all the time. It's just a little spring near the end of the clutch cable ( down low, not at the handlebar lever).

Re:Another clutch question... 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I finally opened her up and looked at the clutch assembly. I found the throwout bearing was worn out, as I pulled the case cover off, little ball bearings fell out in my lap. So, hopefully, by next weekend, I'll be riding again! Is it normal everywhere, that nobody carries parts anymore? I had to wait a week to get a Clutch cable, then another week for a gasket, now a week for the bearing...that's nuts! At least once the bearing gets here, all I have to do is install it and change the oil again...at least that is on the shelf!

The best bearing to replace it with is a 7003C series bearing. It has an angled race and is better able to take a lateral load than the 6003 series Yamaha uses.

Still that's mighty low miles for a clutch bearing to fail. Maybe not enough freeplay in the lever?

I agree with Scott. Sounds like the adjustment was too tight....maybe before you bought her.

You should be able to put a nickle snugly in the clutch lever by the cable when you pull it after adjustment.

I think a lot of the problem is the mileage...the bike apparently sat unused for several years, I changed the oil last week and when I opened it up yesterday the oil was black and inside the case was dried dirt/foam in the upper areas...i'll be changeing the oil every couple of hundred miles until it cleans it out...maybe seafoam it next weekend when i put it together...

Got it! Put it in the freezer, got it good and cold, then sat in in the sun until it was too hot to handle...two good whacks with the punch and it was free! Assembled everything and took a nice evening ride with my wife. Beautiful! Very smooth and clean shifting.
